It was a day to remember for Kaulig Racing on Sunday. The team earned only their second-ever Cup Series win, at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. AJ Allmendinger shocked the NASCAR world when he held off playoff driver William Byron to take the checkered flag at the Roval. Holding off someone like Byron is no easy feat. The 25-year-old has already won six races this year and has one of the fastest cars on track. It was an incredible result for the team. However, all might not be well at Kaulig Racing despite their triumph at the Roval.

AJ Allmendinger has been a part of the NASCAR Cup Series for well over a decade. The 41-year-old is not a Cup Series champion, nor has he won a lot of races. Perhaps that’s why fans were so happy when he won at Charlotte on Sunday. After the race, Allmendinger became emotional as he thanked his team for helping him get on victory road. But his time as a Cup Series driver may be up.

Kaulig Racing set to make the harshest of decisions, claims NASCAR insider

AJ Allmendinger was given the ticket to be a full-time Cup Series driver for Kaulig Racing this season after he retired from full-time racing in 2018. He has since made a strong comeback in the Cup. The veteran was driving for the team in the Xfinity Series until now and had racked up as many as 12 wins in that time. While that would usually be enough for a driver to hold on to his seat, that is not the case at Kaulig.

On a recent episode of ‘The Teardown’, motorsports journalists Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi dove into AJ Allmendinger’s future in NASCAR. Bad news for his fans, it is not likely that he will be a Cup Series racer next season. But that has nothing to do with skills. As per Jordan Bianchi, it all comes down to one thing: Money.

“I talked to Chris Rice (Kaulig Racing President) before that press conference one-on-one and he said to me…I asked him the question, it’s not all about performance, is it? And he goes no, it’s not. It’s a lot about sponsorship dollars and funding and that kind of thing and that’s where there’s a gap right now,” Jordan Bianchi said.

“They just don’t have the funding in place for that 16 car so they’ve got to make some decisions or not and you know, I’ll say this, I’m gonna say the thing I’m gonna write…all indications are and the sources indicate the AJ Allmendinger is probably going to be full time in the Xfinity Series next year running for Kaulig. And he’s gonna move down,” the eminent NASCAR journalist added.

Truly, the world of motorsports is cruel. Be it NASCAR, Formula One, or any other form of it. At the highest level of motorsports, money talks way louder than it does in other sports. Perhaps AJ Allmendinger had an idea that his time in the Cup Series was coming to an end and that might be why he burst into tears after winning at Charlotte.

In the post-race interview, AJ Allmendinger was a man crying his eyes out after winning the race. When asked about the reason for his emotional outburst, the 41-year-old simply said that he did not know when he would be able to do it again, if at all.

“You don’t know when you’re gonna do it again. I love all the men and women in Kaulig Racing so much. First of all, hi to my beautiful wife, my new baby boy. I usually give these checkered flags away, but I’m gonna have to wrap this around Aero,” he said.

“My mom and dad, all my family and friends, those people see how much anguish and how much I put it on my shoulders when we’re struggling and it just means the world. I hate crying right now but it…you just…it’s a freaking Cup race man, you don’t know when it’s ever gonna happen again. Let’s go, come on,” Allmendinger added.
