All drivers share the goal of winning the Cup Series championship at least once in their careers. While some drivers have had the opportunity to secure multiple championships, others have not been as fortunate. Denny Hamlin, a Joe Gibbs Racing driver with nearly two decades of experience, is yet to win his first championship.
Despite coming close on numerous occasions, Hamlin has always fallen short. Following a recent setback at Dover, the JGR driver sent a concise, 9-word plea to his boss, Joe Gibbs, in which he simply requested a better pit crew to assist him in achieving more victories.

At a press conference with Frontstretch, Hamlin shared his thoughts with the media, “We all want to get it fixed. And you know, I probably had some bad timing with my text messages to Joe. I think he’s probably still in victory lane with Martin when I fired off the text to him.”
“But I just, I don’t want to waste my last handful of years right? Just giving away wins… I just became very frustrated and it’s built over time.”
“I was frustrated last year. I was frustrated a little bit this year… I know they’re working hard. I have a really good young group of professional pit crew guys working on my car every week. But they are young, right? And they will take time to really get all the reps they need to be a top top-tier pit crew,” he continued.

Hamlin emphasized that the primary issue was the youth of his pit crew members, who would need more time to hone their skills. He implored Joe Gibbs to assign some of the best and most experienced pit crew members from the team to ensure he remained competitive at the top level. After all, time spent in the pits plays a crucial role in determining a driver’s position on the track.

During the same session with the press, Hamlin went on to say, “The only negative is I don’t have that kind of time, right? So I think that when we look at the list, and I think it was, seven or eight races just in the last, 16 months that we were in control of them, and then we lost control.”
“That’s what becomes frustrating because, of course, I do have goals I would like to get to. My message to Joe is, we feel like we’re your top-tier team. And so you know, try to give us the best opportunity to win each and every week. So all the money you’re paying me is worth it,” He concluded.

With any luck, Gibbs will heed Hamlin’s plea and provide him with the best pit crew available. This change could potentially make a crucial difference, enabling Hamlin to finally secure a victory. It has been difficult watching Hamlin repeatedly miss championship opportunities, and fans eagerly hope for him to break that drought as soon as possible. If it doesn’t happen this year, it would be great to see it happen before he decides to retire.
