The one team dominating the winning charts of NASCAR at the moment is Hendrick Motorsports. Clinching victory in four out of eight races is no minor feat. William Byron owns three of those titles, the most recent one at the 0.526-mile short track of Martinsville.
However, Byron’s fortunes were not so bright in his last outing on the same track. Overcome by sweltering temperatures and a malfunctioning helmet, Byron was at his wit’s end in the fall race. He recently elaborated on the same while also detailing his path to glory.

Splashed in ruby red colors, Rick Hendrick’s cars were ready to commemorate his team’s 40th anniversary. Martinsville is the place where Geoff Bodine snagged Hendrick’s first win in 1984. And now the team made jaws drop: three Hendrick racers clinched all podium spots. William Byron led the trio, bagging the title and the prize clock with a gleeful smile. Yet this achievement was possible after a tough struggle.
In a post-race press conference, Byron revealed his misery in last fall’s Martinsville race. “I was spent last fall, and I think that brought a lot of anxiety and nightmares coming up here at this time. Just coming up the road and thinking about what’s the progress we have made inside the car, we’ve been working on it non-stop to try to get my helmet and fans feeling better.”
Yet Byron heaped massive credit on his team for surviving the ordeal strongly. “We had a really tough day in the fall, was one of the worst experiences as a team, but one of the best experiences to realize the resilience that our team has.” He had finished in 13th place last fall. Yet Byron not only overcame his fears but added the 305th trophy to Hendrick’s cabinet in a resounding fashion.

Jeff Gordon, vice chairman of Hendrick Motorsports, already had faith in William Byron’s potential. After Martinsville, he said: “Every time we have a milestone day or opportunity or moment, he steps up.” Byron was able to make Rick Hendrick proud, and the No 24 driver’s versatility allowed him to do so.
In 2024, he has a superspeedway win, a road course win, and a short track win. Yet he admitted that he and the team “knew that the short tracks were a weakness. So we started working on that in the off-season. Just like we did on the road courses, we just had to take baby steps. We said, ‘Okay, can we finish 10th, can we finish 5th, can we lead laps’.”
