Since the advent of the Gen-7 cars, the 36-car field has gotten more and more leveled up for everyone on the grid. Due to the similarity between each car, it is impossible to seize an edge over an opponent based on speed alone. William Byron, after having won the highest number of races this year, understands how crucial his pit crew has been in aiding his victories. The Hendrick Motorsports star gave a shout-out to his #24 pit crew for coming up with the best strategies and helping him win those important races.
William Byron celebrates the unsung heroes
If the fans remain unsatisfied due to the lack of contact or anomaly in the pit lane, that just means that the outfield crew has done their job right. The 12 seconds of tire changing and fuel refill go a long way in making speed and, ultimately, gaining positions. A driver could try all they can to leverage his driving prowess on the track, but if they have a poor pit stop, they could drop down from running up front to the back of the field.

Similarly, a fast car could perhaps gain a couple of positions while running a race, but a good pit stop could result in that car gaining four or even five priceless positions.
William Byron said, “The stuff we do on the racetrack is one aspect, but then the other phase of this is pit road. You might make one pass on the track in 50 laps to advance your position and then you come down pit road and you might make two or three or five. So, those guys play a huge role.” While talking about his pit crew, Byron admitted, “They’re one of the fastest pit crews on Pit Road.”
One would laugh out loud to know that there was a time earlier this year when William Byron won a regular season race at Phoenix but nearly hit a crew member in the process.

Throwback to March 12, 2023. Just a week backward from that day, Byron had won his first victory of the season at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The following week, he was trying his best to win the United Rentals Work United 500. However, in order to win the 312-lap-long race, Byron was in dire need of fresh tires.
In a moment of rushing, Byron almost ran one of his pit members down. Luckily, the crew member leaped and avoided the disaster. For William Byron, it was a near mistake. However, he didn’t let that ruin his race. He did not overcorrect or stall.
Luckily, his crew member was fast enough to jump at the right time to avoid Byron’s machine ramming him. As he got off the pit road, Byron found himself in a great position against his teammate Kyle Larson and drove forth to win his second straight victory of 2023.
