Every year at the Darlington Raceway, many NASCAR drivers compete with special throwback schemes. For next month’s race, Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron will also run a special Axalta Throwback livery. As per reports, the #24 driver will pay tribute to Hendrick Motorsports Vice Chairman Jeff Gordon.

To be precise, he will run a 2007-inspired paint scheme that Gordon drove. Speaking about the former Hendrick star, Byron said, “Some of my first memories of watching Jeff Gordon race was from his 2007 season. While many people remember Jeff Gordon driving the rainbow color scheme, my earliest moments of cheering him on were in the iconic blue and red flames. These races and this paint scheme make up an important chapter in the story of the #24. I can’t wait to honor Jeff and bring this paint scheme for throwback weekend.”

Why is William Byron choosing that particular Jeff Gordon paint scheme?

During that campaign, Gordon squared off against teammate Jimmie Johnson all season long for the title. Within that timeframe, he clinched six race victories, 21 top-five finishes, and 30 top-10 finishes. The former driver also confessed that the season was a fairly special one for him.

According to the Hendrick Motorsports Vice Chairman, he tied with the late great Dale Earnhardt’s win record. He confessed that the race at the Phoenix Raceway was truly unforgettable. This was because he was honoring the legacy of the iconic #3 driver. Since then, he romped to three wins in four races.

Now, William Byron has been in a good run of form lately. Out of all the current 2022 race winners, he is the only one who has racked up more than one win. Both of those came at the Atlanta Motor Speedway and the Martinsville Speedway, respectively. Heading into the coming weekend at Talladega, Byron will definitely be fired up.

Suffice to say, Gordon, himself is equally excited, because Byron has been rapidly progressing this season. The question now is, who will emerge victorious? Will we get a brand new winner, or will Byron bag more wins, or will another winner earn their second win?
