Why William Byron is Just Looking to ‘Have Fun’ Heading into Crunch Playoff Time

Last year, William Byron barely managed to sneak through into the Cup Series playoffs. From there, he went on to finish the season in 14th place. This time around, he is in a much better position and had comfortably qualified for this year’s edition. Recently, the Hendrick Motorsports driver spoke about the difference in position in both years.

He said, “The pressure throughout the week is a lot easier. I’m definitely not as tensed up or thinking about the moment and what I’m going to do to execute a good race. Just kind of going in there just to have fun, obviously you try to have fun every week. It’s a lot more stressful each week. This week is kind of easier on me, obviously I feel like the speedway races, we’ve been good on.”

Byron also believed that his plate racing has improved this season in particular. Now, he firmly insists that there is not much pressure on him, heading into this weekend’s race.

The #24 driver also confessed that he does not envy the other drivers’ situations at all. This is because, many of them are stuck in must-win scenarios or they are right on the qualification bubble. Without a doubt, it is a tough position for them to be in. For drivers like Austin Dillon, Matt DiBenedetto and Chris Buescher, it will be all the more precarious.

Over here, it could mean the difference between both Richard Childress cars qualifying or one getting knocked out. Tyler Reddick has already sealed a slot in 11th place, while Dillon sits in 13th place and is without a win. Over here, his position does not matter, but if he can rack up enough points, he can just about sneak into the Playoff positions for this season.
