Among all the retired NASCAR drivers, Carl Edwards is definitely one of the fan favorites. Who can ever forget his victory celebration of doing a backflip from the window of his car? During his career, Edwards won 28 races in the Cup Series, and by that calculation, it’s safe to say that’s a whole lot of backflips.

Although right now he is the man who owns the signature celebration in the public eye, he didn’t come up with the idea himself. In fact, he did not pick it up from a NASCAR driver either. Surprisingly enough, it came from a driver that competes in a series that rivals Larson’s High Limit Racing. So far the origin story of the backflip has been a mystery, but the 2024 playoffs felt like the right occasion for Edwards to reveal his secret.

As the playoffs are in motion, Carl Edwards made his way to NASCAR’s studio, where he was there for the recording of an Inside the Playoffs episode. Before walking in for the shoot, he was caught on camera, and Edwards obliged. Knowing that fans have been asking about the origin story of his famous celebration, he decided that it was finally time to give the world the scoop.

On NASCAR’s official Instagram page, the video of Edwards revealing his story surfaced. In the video, Edwards wastes no time hooking the fans in by saying, “All right, so the backflip origin story.” Edwards then casually explains how the backflip idea came from before he was ever a Cup Series driver.

Carl Edwards revealed, “I was watching a World of Outlaws race; this guy won the race, got out, and did a backflip. It was Tyler Walker. I was like, ‘This is the craziest thing ever. So cool.'” But before NASCAR fans got to see him celebrate athletically, the flip made its debut after a dirt car race.

Edwards explained, “I started doing it at Capital Speedway and Old Summit in the dirt car. Then I was fortunate enough to win our first race in a ’99 truck in Kentucky, and I thought, ‘Why not?’ It’s just so cool.” Because Edwards thought it was cool and did it in front of the crowd, he realized that he was not the only one to enjoy the sight.

The former NASCAR driver explained how he felt after pulling off his first backflip, saying, “You’re standing there, the crowd’s cheering, and you just won a race. For me, it was a perfect expression of just how exciting it was.” There was a follow-up question from the reporter who asked him about how many backflips he has done in his career, and to that, he did not have an answer.

Carl Edwards raced in NASCAR’s Cup Series for 13 seasons before retiring, and in those years, he won the hearts of millions of fans. It was not only how well he raced but the personality that fans saw once the helmet was off. His personality has gotten him a lot of attention from the media, and it was enough to have Denny Hamlin offer to bring him back to racing.

During one of the recent episodes of Actions Detrimental with Denny Hamlin, the host spoke about his offer to Carl Edwards to get back into NASCAR. Being the co-owner of 23XI Racing, Denny Hamlin extended his offer to give Edwards a chance to relive his glory days by racing in his team. The fact that 23XI Racing just purchased a new charter only makes it easier to have Edwards back in the car.

Hamlin revealed, “I just told him [Edwards] whenever he’s ready, just let me know, whenever you get that itch.” Obviously Edwards was pleased to be given the offer; however, he mentioned the problem he has with current-day NASCAR. However, as Edwards had mentioned in the past, the back flipper will not make it back to NASCAR unless they put the horsepower back into the cars.

There could be many reasons why Denny Hamlin offered a seat to Edwards. The driver’s respect and popularity in the community are some of them, but again, the other reason could be because he has raced against the legend on many occasions and he misses the competition on the tracks. Edwards retired from NASCAR to spend more time with family, but the main reason he was done was because he felt like he had achieved everything he needed to in the sport. Despite not winning a championship title, he is content with his achievements, and although he is not racing anymore, he is highly connected with the sport.
