Junior Johnson was one of the last moonshiners who went on to make a name in NASCAR. Hailing from North Carolina, Johnson sided with the Republicans for almost the entirety of his life. However, he once admitted that he admired the then-Democrat presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Back in 2008, Johnson mentioned that he hailed from a rural part of a conservative state. Also, historically, they had always voted for the Republicans. He even mentioned how “NASCAR car drivers and Democrats don’t usually mix.” However, during the 2008 presidential run, he came out in favor of Democrat candidate Barack Obama.

Johnson mentioned how he was a small entrepreneur and a farmer ultimately. He also said how he respected John McCain and his supporters. However, his major concern was regarding the future of his children and the economic stability of their families.

He stated, “Barack Obama understands what we’re going through and he has a real plan to turn things around. He shares our values–including strong protection for second amendment rights. And he has the kind of steady hand that we need on the wheel in times like these. I believe that’s why North Carolina is finally ready to vote for change–and it’s why I’m ready to do whatever I can to help.”

Junior Johnson urged people to make the right choice

His principal argument sided over how major corporations and lobbyists would shell out big money to rig the rules for themselves. However, in turn, that would only mean difficulties and hardships for small business owners and average American families.

He said, “I’m going to speak out however I can about why I support Barack Obama.” Johnson then urged people to talk about this more and more. He also mentioned how had raced several races throughout his life, but somehow this presidential race was the most important one.
