In a sport that often thrives on established names and familiar faces, Van Gisbergen has defied expectations and swooped into the NASCAR Cup Series like a phoenix from the land down under. But he’s not your typical newcomer. Oh no, he’s a one-for-one dynamo, clinching victory in NASCAR’s inaugural street course race in Chicago just last month and instantly becoming a fan favorite.
During an interview with RACER’s Marshall Pruett, SVG was asked, ?So, Shane, we know that you winning at Chicago brought new fame and acclaim and whatnot, especially here in NASCAR in America. Tell me about going back home, though, right? You’re already the man there. But what was it like coming home? I have to imagine there’s a lot of pride.?
?It was pretty awesome, like the amount of people who reached out and even Ford fans who normally boo for me were stoked to watch the race and like, yeah, we cheered for you, but now we’re against you again when you’re back. But, it was so cool. The responses I got from people, how many people watched it and yeah, just excited, I guess, for the future. And so many people from Australia and New Zealand are along for the ride.? Shane stated, strolling alongside his team owner, Justin Marks.
With an impressive standing as the third contender in the Supercars points race, having snatched victory’s embrace four times this season alone, including a triumph on July 30, Van Gisbergen is riding a high-speed wave of success.
