Six months and 24 races later, the regular season of the NASCAR Cup Series is still brimming with the hot question of who the final 16 making it to the playoffs are. With 13 spots already occupied after the nail-biting race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, the scenes at the brink for the final 3 spots are nothing short of dramatic.

Among the elite drivers who are competing for these spots is Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr, driving the No. 23 Toyota Camry for 23XI racing.

In an interview with Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass prior to the Indianapolis race, the 29-year-old spoke about what his approach was going to be going into the highly anticipated climax of the regular season.

The goal is to not overthink says Bubba Wallace

As things stood before the race, Bubba Wallace sat in the 15th spot, well aware of the threat looming for his qualification. But he appeared to have a clear methodology to approach this tricky situation of his.

Treading on a fine line between accumulating some much-needed strategic points and having good fun, he said to Bob Pockrass, “When you don’t give a damn about things, that makes things fun.”

“You start thinking and overthinking, that dials yourself right out and it’s not fun.”

Openly acknowledging his habit of overthinking, he continued, “I’m a damn good person at overthinking things, especially when it comes to roadcourse racing and taking the fun right out of it. You just got to go out and get back to the basics.”

Bubba Wallace seemed to be taking a rather candid approach to what was coming. His mindset seemed bent on escaping the strong grip of the high-stakes situation to focus on tackling the situation in the lightest manner possible.

Wallace also revealed how his father and he had always hated points racing. Getting into the season with the idea that they’d be finishing in the top five, the current fight for a playoff spot must certainly come as a blow to Bubba Wallace. But Wallace Jr seemed to be letting none of the disappointment get to him with the task in hand not yet completed.

“But we’re here, we’re making the most of it. We’re really proud of our strategy calls to capitalize on points. That’s been the biggest game changer,” he said with grit.
