The crash was a result of a broken brake rotor in Joey Logano’s car. With just 67 laps remaining, Patrick and Logano were running side by side just outside the Top 10. However, suddenly, Logano’s front right tire went flat, and this sent Patrick’s car right into the wall. This led her car to burst into flames and end the race for her.
Aric Almirola, who was driving right behind the two, had nowhere to go and hence skid directly into Logano’s car. The profound impact of the collision sent Almirola’s car into the air. The #43’s car came to rest near the outside fence and the safety crews had to cut the roof to rescue him.
Airlifted to the University of Kansas Medical Center for observation, Almirola suffered the most in the crash. Whereas, Patrick and Logano were checked and soon released from the in-house care center. And the entire incident made Patrick furious. When Logano tried to talk to her, she bluntly brushed him off and said, “I’m not sure if it was you, but I’m pretty sure it was you.”
When Joey Logano explained it was a failure of some sort, she replied, “I hope Aric is OK. He’s definitely feeling the worst of everybody.”
Frustrated at what happened, she told USA Today: “I don’t understand why so much bad luck happens? I mean, why? What else can I say? On the other hand, I was having a really good night and that’s what makes me the most mad. Every time I’m doing better, something stupid happens and I don’t know what to say about it.”
