Gone are the days when motorsports was all about the driver’s skills behind the wheel and a team’s ability to deliver world-class machinery every season. Media houses realize the value of motorsports as a form of entertainment. But it’s not only the camera crew’s work that’s increased tenfold to catch all of the action. Drivers are evolving into celebrities at a pace faster than ever before. However, with the drivers giving more to the fans with every race weekend, the strain it takes on their personal lives might have reached a boiling point. While fans’ expectations are on the rise, Joey Logano has had enough of the questions regarding the drivers’ accessibility.

Joey Logano pulls no punches against ungrateful fans

Speaking on SiriusXM NASCAR radio, Joey Logano blew off steam on the fans and questioned their ability to get a meeting with an NFL star. The 33-year-old pointed out that the drivers were mere mortals just like any other racing enthusiast. Ultimately, what drives them to give so much to the community is the love for racing, not the fame.

Logano voiced his frustration, Our fans are spoiled. And I love our race fans but think about other sports for a second. Think about it. When are you going to meet an NFL player? Can you access an NFL player? Any time, like three hours before a game? No. Maybe if you’re Taylor Swift! But you can meet me, twenty minutes, ten minutes, five minutes before I get in the race car and you can take a picture with me. I am there.”

The No. 22 Penske driver made it clear that the racers give it their all to please the NASCAR community without fail every weekend. Come snowfall or thunderstorm, the drivers are always available to sign autographs, or at least try to do their best with the limited schedules they have to work around.

It’s fair to say that Logano felt fairly uncertain regarding the gratitude drivers receive for all that they do for fans. With all the revenue generated through fan interactions, ticket sales, and merchandise, it would be easy for drivers to choose the high life instead. But there’s one characteristic about a NASCAR racer that never truly changes.

NASCAR racers prefer to stay humble according to Logano

Joey Logano brought up the stark contrast to other sports, where access to the athletes is much more restrictive, with one-on-one interactions being a rare sight or masked behind a paywall.

Frustrated with the lack of validation and appreciation on the fans’ end, Logano took a stand for every driver. He stated that the drivers are indeed extremely accessible and come from humble backgrounds. Unlike other sports where fame is a blessing in disguise for most, NASCAR drivers prefer the peace and solitude of families and bustling V8s.

He added, “And when you think of racecar drivers that are staying in a motorhome, I don’t know, I feel like the racecar drivers that I know and get to know, they are normal folk. Like there is no like, I don’t see them, I mean there’s a couple of them that maybe live a little bigger lifestyle than others but the majority of them are normal racers.”

At the end of the day, Logano feels the top Cup Series dogs are no different than the rookies when it comes to competition. Everyone is there to reach the checkered flag first, and that’s all that matters. Logano concluded, “They’ve just been doing it on a little bigger stage, and yeah they may have made a little more money, and that changes their lifestyle a little here and there but they’re still racers at heart.”
