Recently, Amy Earnhardt enjoyed a candid conversation with Kenny Wallace. Among many topics, she opened up about her relationship with her husband, Dale Earnhardt Jr. She also talked about her family, especially their two daughters, Isla (6) and Nicole (4). The couple loves to banter with each other, and sometimes their kids are used as arsenal.
She also offered a sneak peek into her childhood, and what she was like before she met Dale Jr. According to her, her older daughter shares a few of her own traits. Meanwhile, her youngest shares some physical traits with Amy Earnhardt. However, when it came to the girls’ more problematic temperaments, she was always quick to ‘disown’ them.
The 42-year-old had no qualms about throwing her husband under the bus. Of course, this is almost always meant to be in good fun and not to be taken seriously. Who knows, maybe Dale Jr. also does the same when Isla and Nicole misbehave, and pegs it as inheriting it from their mother.

Amy Earnhardt spoke of what her children inherited from their parents
Amy revealed to Kenny Wallace, “As a child, I was kind of quiet and reserved. Went by the rules and, Isla is more like that. Nicole’s pretty wild. I think Nicole looks more like me and Isla acts more like I do. Isla definitely looks like her Mimi, I think, Dale’s mom. Physically she reminds me of her, so we’ll see how that develops. Genetics are so cool, watching them do anything as they grow. ‘Oh wow! That’s something I’d do,’ or ‘That’s absolutely Dale!’ Everything they do anything that’s like stinkery, I just tell Dale that’s his genetics. ‘What’s wrong with your kids? That’s you.'”
Interestingly, she made some observations about her family. She likely hadn’t had a chance to meet Dale Earnhardt Sr. when he was alive. However, she knew enough about him to know that her husband adopted her father-in-law’s habits. “Dale [Earnhardt Jr.] has this stance. He’ll have like one leg out with his arms crossed. His dad did that. There’s so many pictures.” said Amy. When Amy told Dale Jr. about this observation he was overjoyous. “Anything that makes him look like his dad, he loves that.”

Now, it appears that the expression, ‘Like Father, Like Daughter’, is true. As Isla also unconsciously adopted the same pose, of standing with one leg out, and arms crossed. “Isla’s born and literally at one and a half – two years old, she’s just walking, she will stand the same exact way… Genetics, that is so weird… That is in her DNA to naturally just stand just like her grandfather.”

Amy Earnhardt reveals her first experience at the track with Dale Jr.
Amy Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr. became official in 2011 and got married in 2016. They had known each other for about a year or so before they were official and during that time Dale Jr. was the biggest draw of NASCAR. Being the son of a 7-time champion Dale Earnhardt Sr. the cameras and eyes were always on him.
In the same episode with Kenny Wallace, she was asked, “When you know clearly you were with the the most famous race car driver in the world. What went through your head?” Over his career, he won the Most Popular Driver Award 15 times, so it’s no exaggeration when Amy said, “I was blown away and I was scared at the same time” when she saw fans flock to her husband.
She also revealed that Dale Jr. normally tried to rush his way out of the crowd inconspicuously. “He was always like head down ran through the garage ran through people. Unless he was planning on signing autographs and he would stop and do the whole thing.” At the end of the day, Dale Jr. does love his fans and signing autographs was the least he could do. More recently he revived his iconic #8 Budweiser in 2024 at Florence Motor Speedway for one race. Although Amy’s recollection of that race might be a bit sketchy.

When asked by Kenny Wallace of her side of that night, she said, “We got two laps in and the wheels were falling off the kids. I mean melting down so I take them back to the motor coach to put em’ to sleep and I fell asleep too and I missed the whole thing.” When Amy texted Dale Jr. after the race to tell him what happened, Dale Jr.’s response was what you’d expect. Amy said, “I texted him like ‘What happened’ and he was like ‘Are you f—ing kidding me.‘”
Despite Amy sleeping through his race and blaming their kids’ bad qualities on him, the couple share a special bond and Dale Jr. is very grateful to have Amy in his life. “Without Amy, I would’ve suffered emotionally, really severely… I would have probably given up.” Jr. said this while recovering from concussions in 2016. The couple have been pillars of support for each other and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
