The 2nd race between the round-of-12 contenders came to an end at the Talladega Superspeedway just a few hours back. With the heat of the engines not yet cooling down, racing fans have already taken it to the internet to compare the records that were broken by their favorite drivers. The day’s winner Ryan Blaney wasn’t left out of the mix.
With all well and the fans of Ryan Blaney celebrating the victory, one user on Reddit came up with the stat comparing Blaney and Kyle Petty, and ended up dividing fans.

At 29 years old, Blaney appears to just be getting his groove on for the years ahead. Racing for Team Penske for 6 years now, he pulled a narrow finish over Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick to get his third win at the Superspeedway. In what was a completely dramatic end to the race, Blaney edged past Harvick with a lead of 0.012 seconds to bag the day.
Talking to the media after the race, he expressed his happiness saying, “I’m just proud of the whole #12 group—everybody who makes this possible. To win here three times at Talladega is super-cool.”
When Blaney took the flag at Talladega, it was his 9th win in the top tier of NASCAR. And that happens to be one more than how many NASCAR veteran, Kyle Petty, won throughout his career. Kyle Petty, the son of racing legend Richard Petty, was a prominent racer in his time. Though he did not rake up many wins throughout his career, he has been a figure of considerable influence in the racing community.
Comparing his accomplishments with that of Blaney’s behind-the-wheel, the Reddit user posted a hopeful expectation, “Ryan Blaney has passed Kyle Petty for most wins all time in over 500 less races.” They further added, “Ryan Blaney has passed Kyle Petty for most Nascar Cup wins Ryan Blaney is now 66th all time in wins. I’m hoping he can finish top 40, 9 wins in 8 years so far, would need roughly 12-14 more wins depending on other current drivers careers. Pretty doable if he can go 10 more years.”

Though the backgrounds of the two drivers are as diverse as they get, stats agree with the Reddit user, Kangarooski57. However, fans of the former racer and of the Talladega winner were found expressing their contrasting thoughts under the post.

Kyle Petty has always strongly expressed his thoughts. His criticisms and harsh takes on certain matters have not found the right chord with racing fans. His negative thoughts on the Darlington Raceway and his most recent controversies surrounding his words on Ryan Blaney’s best friend, Bubba Wallace, are just a couple of examples on a long list.
Despite the image that he has formed of himself in the community after hanging up his racing suit, many consider the 1996 Brickyard 400 to be an important race in Petty’s career. He escaped a severe crash in Indianapolis with just bruises, but fans believe that it was after this race that his graph turned downhill. Expressing how the numbers between Blaney and Petty were not as wide as one could be led to believe, a NASCAR fan wrote, “Kyle Petty only drove 829 races in his career. Blaney has driven 301. Kyle Petty was winless for his last 406 (by my count) starts. Blaney was (only) 105 races quicker.”
Another fan, in a hilarious reminder of a famous quote by Dale Earnhardt Jr, wrote, “What the f*** does Kyle Petty have to do with this?”

Another user was tired of Petty’s continuous remarks of criticisms through the years. Considering that the former racer was not someone to be taken heavily, he commented, “I think some of you guys take what Kyle Petty says too seriously and it shows.”
Despite comparisons between the two drivers from the two different eras, the fact is that Blaney still stands a chance to win a Cup Series championship while Petty does not. The former racer had said earlier this year, “Ryan Blaney is the new Kasey Kahne. Potential unfulfilled. Everybody wants to talk about what he can do, but he never does anything.”

Weeks after lashing his words out, Petty sees Blaney take the win in one of the most crucial tracks of NASCAR for the 3rd time. With fans setting lines between the two, Blaney’s performances going forward will go a long way in settling the debate.
