2024 will be a crucial year in Ty Gibbs’ Cup Series career. The 21-year-old had an impressive rookie season in 2023 and he will only be looking to improve. A seat at Joe Gibbs Racing comes with high expectations and Gibbs would want to live up to them. Thankfully for him, he is in a good place at the moment and has every opportunity to truly stamp his name into the Cup Series picture in 2024.

Ty Gibbs dominantly won the 2022 Xfinity Series, which led to him getting a full-time seat in the JGR Cup Series program in 2023. In his debut full-time season, he earned 4 top-five and 10 top-ten finishes. He might not have made the playoffs, but for a rookie, those numbers are pretty impressive.

After a successful rookie year, what goals should Ty Gibbs set for 2024?

In all probability, Ty Gibbs will have a year that will make fans stop and take notice. Although he is the grandson of the great Joe Gibbs, he will still have to prove himself on the biggest stage. You’d think winning the Xfinity Series title would be enough for people to believe in him, but the 21-year-old received mixed reactions from the crowd till now due to his driving style.

Either way, those reactions have not deterred him from his goal and he is only going to get better. If one looks at how Gibbs progressed in the 2023 season, there would be an upward curve. The first 4 races were not memorable by any stretch, but he then got back-to-back top-ten finishes in the next 4 races. Consistency came into his game towards the end of the season as he regularly challenged for a place in the top ten and even managed to earn 4 top-five finishes.

Those finishes in the top five came at some of the toughest tracks on the calendar – Pocono, Watkins Glen, Bristol, and the Roval. Some seasoned veterans struggle to get it right at these tracks and if Ty Gibbs improves his race craft, he can be a real contender for the win at these venues. Also, Toyota just upgraded its Camry, and it is expected to be a lot faster than last season.

Speaking of wins, Ty Gibbs’ goal in 2024 will be to qualify for the playoffs, and the best way to do that is by winning a race in the regular season. If we take a look at his record, there are several tracks he has emerged victorious at in the Xfinity Series. The competition may be different but the track isn’t and given that he is in one of the best teams in the Cup Series, there isn’t much stopping him.

Las Vegas, Atlanta, Richmond, and Michigan are some of the places he has tasted success before. He will be looking to repeat those feats in 2024 and at some new tracks as well to make it into the playoffs for the first time in his Cup career. A feat like that is easier said than done, but Ty Gibbs is surrounded by world-class company.

At just 21, Gibbs is a sponge for knowledge and he will be able to learn from some of the best drivers in NASCAR today at Joe Gibbs Racing. Denny Hamlin is perhaps the best driver to never win the Cup Series so far. Christopher Bell is a rising star who seems to be nearing his racing prime. And regardless of what happened in 2023, Martin Truex Jr is a former Cup Series champion. There may not be many one-on-one teaching sessions, but there is a lot Gibbs can pick up from these veterans during the practice sessions.

While there will be drivers that will help Gibbs out on track, there will be some he will share a rivalry with. Fans last year were robbed of a rivalry between Gibbs and Noah Gragson. The two shared an intense battle in 2022 in the Xfinity Series. With Gragson back in the Cup with Stewart-Haas Racing, fans will be eagerly looking forward to the two drivers resuming their rivalry.
