NASCAR and family heritage are two prospects that go hand in hand. The same can be said for Austin Dillon, whose grandfather owns a Cup Series team. At the same time, it may seem that his future is secure under the stewardship of his grandfather, but motorsports can be cruel at times. However, this is a known fact for the Dillon family.
Richard Childress, who has an impressive 285 NASCAR Cup Series races under his belt, could not have a single win, let alone a championship. Then came Richard’s son-in-law, Mike Dillon, and the script somewhat remained the same. Mike had a good Xfinity career, but again, nothing to show in terms of wins and titles. Now, carrying the family baton, Austin Dillon is faced with a similar possibility.

He may have big boots to fill in, but sometimes it feels like Austin Dillon is not appreciated as much as he should be. For instance, the 367 Cup series race is no small feat. And to top this off, he has four Cup series wins to his name. It looks like the respect and recognition stakes are a little too high for Austin Dillon.
But the 2023 season was one to forget for Dillon. This is where he needs to improve, get some consistent races, and manage some top-ten finishes. The only noteworthy highlight of the season was his P3 finish at Bristol. It’s not that Austin Dillon has not proved that he is a good racer, but with his showing in the 2023 season, doubts have crept in. After all, a win at the Daytona 500 does count for something.
Speaking of improvements, certainly, a bump up for the 29th position in the points tally would be highly appreciated by his team. The 2023 season-ending was marked by a modest P10 finish at Homestead Miami Speedway. Statistically speaking, it was his worst year: average start (20.0), average finish (21.8), DNF’s (10). While 2023 was certainly not Dillon’s year, he has not ruled out a comeback by the Richard Childress Racing Team.

Richard Childress Racing would like to forget the 2023 Cup Series. With changes in the crew chief and the addition of Kyle Busch to the team, it has been a season of lessons and learning for the entire team. Austin Dillon, who himself could not win any races last season, still hopes for better results in 2024. It’s not just winning races; it’s the playoffs that are his ultimate goal.
“I think we’re capable of winning races and being in the playoffs. And we’ve got to do a better job of when we get in the playoffs, capitalize a little better. Kyle just didn’t really have a great second round, and we couldn’t help him as much as we needed to. So, hopefully next year, we’re both in it; we’re both fighting together, and we have more shots at it,” said Austin Dillon.

Having made it to the playoffs five times in his NASCAR career, the latest one being in the 2022 season, Austin Dillon certainly has the right to be optimistic for a better 2024 season.
