Do you find yourself guilty of harboring a sweet tooth? If you do, you have something in common with Dale Earnhardt Jr. But to narrow it down, the sport’s most beloved legend appears to be a huge fan of the ‘Nerds’ candy. On his ‘Download’ podcast, Junior’s been open about his affinity towards the rare and now-discontinued ‘Nerds blizzard’ at Dairy Queen as a younger man.

At age 49, evergreen Dale Jr. still finds himself attracted to Nerds with that same younger man’s gusto. Just ask his wife, Amy. Making a surprise appearance on the Download a few days back, Amy hilariously let slip how she had only recently “intercepted” and ‘vanished’ a shipment of Nerds Gummy Clusters meant to satisfy her husband’s sugar cravings. But guess what? Dale Jr. might’ve already found a new item to explore on his weekly candy orders. Although not new to many people, he seems excited about the Nerds ‘rope’ variant. And the fans are loving every bit of his down-to-earth connection with the candy on social media.

Only one person is fortunate enough to call Dale Jr. her significant other. And that person is his wife, Amy. From exchanging vows with him to having two beautiful daughters, Amy (née Reimann) has been Junior’s strongest supporter for quite a long time. But these days, Junior’s penchant for the peculiar has kept Amy on full alert.

On a March episode of the Dale Jr. Download, the man himself was vocal about a four-foot-long LEGO Titanic replica that had caused his wife to give him a “hard time.” But as for the most recent of Dale Jr.’s ‘dashing buys to irk your significant other,’ he got himself some Nerds Gummy Clusters. Answering a question probing for her husband’s strangest purchase in recent regard, Amy said, “He just recently bought a bunch of candy that I intercepted… Those nerd gummy things. He bought a giant box full of them. I’m like what you gonna do with that. I’m gonna hide that in my computer room. He sits in there and eats his candy.”

Now, she wouldn’t tell if Dale Jr. intentionally lost that order of Nerds or if she threw it away. But a closer look at their exchanges would suggest those treats are history. However, the most recent Twitter update from Dale Jr. reads, “I have just recently been delighted to discover “nerds clusters”. Now I’ve learned in my travels that there is a “nerds rope” as well. @DirtyMoMedia @daltongreco @AndrewKurlandTV @TampaTimms”. For those unfamiliar, Nerds Rope, a spin-off of the original product, is essentially a gummy string covered in Nerds candies all over the outside. It comes in three flavors: original, tropical, and berry.

But as Amy also suggested on the podcast, “He used to eat fireballs. This is before the kids but he used to sit on the couch after hours and just suck on fireballs.” But that’s not all. Channeling his inner child to the fullest, he used to leave the inside of the cinnamon-flavored jawbreakers in between the couch cushions.

Regardless, just as a matter of fact, both Nerds and the ‘Atomic Fireball’ candies are under the ownership of the Italy-based Ferrero Group. These two products are pretty well-known across the United States and the rest of the world. Hence, when Jr. made his Twitter post expressing his surprise at discovering a new candy to enjoy, the fans had some varying opinions to throw his way.

Some suggested that Dale Jr. “try the tropical nerd rope” before the rest. But others would agree that the original flavor kicks harder than ever to this day. And as for that, a few fans observed: “Nerd ropes have been around for like 20+ years.” Therefore, it is quite surprising to see an assumed lifelong Nerds fan not know about this product. As one diehard opined, What a time to be alive.” However, Junior deserves more than just the benefit of the doubt on this one.

But someone else wrote, “Man, I feel like Amy has been hiding stuff from you first Legos now this.” But to clarify this passionate user’s sentiments, an earlier address by Dale Jr. made it clear: “I think Amy is worried that, okay the Titanic is huge, the four feet long, when you get done with this, where the hell it’s gonna go? See, I’m gonna build this thing. It will set out for a while, and then I don’t know. I’ll throw it back in the box, and it’ll disappear.”

But assembling a complete LEGO set from scratch—that too, the Titanic—is no easy job. Only last month, Jr. revealed that he’s done with parts of the ship, thanks in part to help from his daughters Isla and Nicole and wife Amy. However, on the topic of the Nerds Rope, Dale Jr. is dropping hints about: Better keep that on the down low .Amy’s gonna find out you got candy!” opined one fan. And we couldn’t agree more ourselves.
