What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Kyle Busch’s name? Attitude, controversies, spats, or is it the recent documentary Rowdy? As a matter of fact, Busch is synonymous with all of the above. In a recent conversation, the bad boy of NASCAR revealed some lesser-known facts about the documentary, which was re-released in February by a streaming service. He also opened up about his notorious rivalry with Martin Truex Jr.

In his recent appearance on The Residency Podcast, Kyle Busch elaborated on the minute details that were not showcased in the documentary. Busch seemed unsatisfied with some aspects of Rowdy as he talked about the incident when he had rammed Truex Jr into the wall. He said, “They [Filmmakers] just didn’t build up to the moment. Like, it only looked like I did it in that moment, like right there.

“Like the guy hit me a little bit and then I totally wiped him out.

“But like, the five years before that, of the battles that we had, and the run-ins that we had, we didn’t show that. Because they were like, ‘Man, you don’t want to be petty about it.'”

The Richard Childress Racing driver further delved into the events from 2004. It was a time when their rivalry was at a peak, as both Busch and Truex Jr were going neck and neck all season. Busch revealed how, in one of the final races of the season in Darlington, Truex Jr decided to brake-check him, which led to Busch losing the race, and eventually, the championship.

While the makers wanted to showcase brighter aspects in the movie, Busch, being the “bad boy” he is, illustrated how sweet vengeance is when he rammed Truex Jr five years later.

He said, “So you know, I mean yeah it’s a little petty but us race car drivers man, we’re like elephants, we don’t forget!”

As Busch suggests, the bad blood between them started way back in the 2004 Busch Series when Truex Jr, in a dire situation, brake-checked Busch. Adding to the already spicy ordeal, the former teammates also had numerous run-ins, notably in 2009 and 2014 when Busch wrecked Truex Jr.

Later on, things became much more serious at the Brickyard 400 in 2017 when Truex Jr, going into turn 1 on a restart, bumped into Busch, causing a major crash in which Busch’s car was totaled and Truex Jr’s machine was engulfed in flames.
