Ever since Carl Edwards was named in NASCAR’s 75 greatest drivers, rumors of his return to Cup Series racing have floated around. The 2007 Busch Cup champion is one of the most anticipated figures currently. Fans have been looking forward to seeing him in action, especially after Edwards teased the fans yet again this time.

The former Joe Gibbs Racing driver has said that starting in a Cup Series race sounds like a viable option to him. While some fans are waiting for this to become a reality, many are tired of the riddles Edwards has been presenting.

“Not Planning on Doing Any Driving”: Carl Edwards Confuses Fans Yet Again in Comeback Saga

In case you do not know what we mean by ‘riddles’, it was only a few weeks back when Edwards almost denied his potential entry into the Cup series saying, “It was easy to not race when I first stepped away, but it’s getting harder and harder. I like sliding stuff around and driving cars. So there’ll be a time when I go do something. Maybe sim work, something like that … to see if I could still drive. It’s a step-by-step process.”

But now, having said all that, the 43-year-old has come out with yet another confusing statement.

“Yeah, there is.” As per NASCAR, this is what Edwards had to say when asked if there were any ideas for him to return to the top flight of NASCAR. Well, while this phrase might be enough to excite the fans, the rest of the conversation toned down the hype by a margin.

Edwards then reveals what type of role he would take over if he does ever make a return anytime soon in an interview with NASCAR, saying, “I’m not planning on doing any driving. (The Cup Series) is the tip of the spear. These guys are so good that I would be terribly slow, so I’d have to prep a lot. Seriously, that’s the truth.” There is definitely some truth and reasoning behind Edwards’ answer. Competition in NASCAR has grown to a whole new level in current times. With this many talented drivers on the grid vying for the top spot, it could be really difficult for Carl to settle in.

“For me, I really feel racing is a risky sport, There’s risk involved, and if I’m not committed 100%, I don’t feel that it’s the right thing for me to go do for fun. But I’ll tell you this, if it creeps in and it’s something we wanna go do, then I promise you I’ll give it a 100%,”

“I’ll do the best I can. But right now, no, I’m not planning anything,” adds Edwards, implying a hazy future in the sort so far.

This will dishearten a lot of fans who were looking forward to seeing the legend in action. But Edwards has been careful in choosing his options and will evaluate each one before taking the decision.

Fans Get Confused by Edwards’ Words and Take Up the Guessing Game

Some fans are of the opinion that the guessing game has gone on for too long. And Edwards should reveal his plans now. While Edwards has somewhat denied his involvement in the near future, the fandom is left speculating about what possibly could it mean. A fan on Twitter says that 23XI Racing could be a possible employer for Edwards. The Michael Jordan-owned team has the right finances and a good project for this as well.

Translation: I would be willing to come back if the price and team is right. New driver for 23XI racing?” tweets the fan.

Some have felt pity for the former Roush Fenway driver, saying that he has a strong urge to race again and he’s holding that back. “He wants to come back so bad. Deep down it’s burning a hole in him.”

Another section of fans highlighted the contradiction in his statements. Well, talking about racing in a one-off race and then dismissing any plans of racing soon sounds like a huge contrast. Fans have targeted exactly this on social media platforms and demanded the truth.

“So, he WANTS to do a one off race, but not do any driving. Is he going to be the co pilot? Lol.”

“Do what Dale Jr. does, run an Xfinity series race on the slower tracks. Would love to see that, and it would boost the ticket sales.” suggested another fan.

Dale Jr is someone who made a name for himself with ventures in late model racing and the CARS tour especially. If we could see Carl Edwards following his footsteps, that would be a really great sight.
