Home/NASCAR

Competition is a tricky thing. Sometimes it plays into your uniqueness and makes you stand out even more, but sometimes, it plays against your unique characteristics, diluting them into homogeneity. Perhaps the latter was on the mind of Mike Davis, the manager and close friend of Dale Earnhardt Jr. when it comes to NASCAR in the world of motorsports. Or rather, when it comes to NASCAR against Formula 1.

After the recent Cup race at Circuit of The Americas in which a couple of F1 champions, Jenson Button, and Kimi Raikkonen, took part, many are being critical of the way racing is in NASCAR as compared to F1.

Mike Davis defends NASCAR against recent comparisons with F1

What makes NASCAR unique compared to other forms of motorsports was a topic on the latest episode of the Dale Jr. Download, a podcast show with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mike Davis as co-hosts.

Their discussions on this subject attracted praise from a NASCAR fan as they tweeted, “@MikeDavis88 had me shouting “Hallelujah” and “Amen” on today’s DJD.”

“‘Maybe we are the ones who fight at the end of the party,’ ‘Maybe we are more physical’, ‘…this is NASCAR, idk why we have to be embarrassed by that,’ ‘Kudos to you, Mike, for standing up for our sport. #NotF1.'”

This caught the attention of Davis as he doubled down on his stance and replied, “Our sport has nothing to apologize for. We’re NASCAR! We are proud to deliver green-flag finishes. We’re not scared to rack ‘em up 2 wide. Yes, we have flaws.”

“One of them is we’d wreck our mommas to get the trophy. If that’s a problem, we’ll seek therapy one day. JMO.”

Last year, during the Ask Jr. segment of his podcast show, Earnhardt Jr. was asked by a fan about his thoughts on the Miami GP, to which the Hall of Famer essentially said he’s not interested in F1 anymore.

“I hesitate to say this, but I can’t get into it,” he admitted. “I’m not incapable of enjoying F1 because I used to watch it with Mika Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher, and those guys were going at it.”

“It was pretty awesome back then, but for some reason, I have had a hard time finding my interest or my connection to F1.”

Now, it’s true that NASCAR is trying and experimenting with changing and repositioning its product. But do you think in doing so, they’re losing the essence, the uniqueness, and the spirit of stock car racing?
