It’s safe to say the former Xfinity Series champion Daniel Suarez did not have the best of performances last season in the NASCAR Cup Series. The Trackhouse Racing star will be desperate for a better display this year if he wants to keep his seat on the team. He recently revealed that he and his team need to have a change in mentality to do any better.
In 2023, Daniel Suarez failed to make it through to the playoffs after a winless season. It was incredibly disappointing as the year before that, he made it into the last 16 for the first time as a Cup driver. The 32-year-old would have wanted to keep that run but multiple issues throughout the season ruined his challenge for a place in the post-season.

There needs to be massive improvement from the #99 team in 2024 and Daniel Suarez is well aware of that. Speaking on a recent episode of the NASCAR Live podcast, the Mexican-born racer said that one of his biggest regrets was that the team had the same issues throughout the entirety of last season. In simpler words, they did not learn from their mistakes and that’s something they simply cannot afford to do this season.
“Every year is very important to perform, regardless if you’re in a contract year or not. I’m the kind of person that, like after last year, you just have to learn from those things. I feel like the biggest upset I had last year was that we had a lot of the same issues throughout the year. We were not able to learn from them and get better,” the man from Monterrey said.
The 2016 Xfinity Series champion also emphasized the need for a change of mentality this year. Suarez does not want to be stuck in the midfield every single season in the Cup Series but that is what has been happening of late. Whether things will get better this season is yet to be seen.
“We have to have a different mindset, we have to have a different approach to things if we want to become a strong team. I’m not interested in being an average team forever. We have to be great and to be able to be that we have to have a different approach,” the Trackhouse star added.
For Daniel Suarez, this season may really be now or never for his future in Trackhouse Racing. After the disappointment of last season, the team has already let go of his crew chief but the decision did not come as a surprise to the driver.

Travis Mack was the crew chief of the #99 team in 2023 but this coming season, he will be working with the #16 Kaulig Racing team. Speaking about the dismissal, Daniel Suarez said that it did not come out of the blue considering the performances they had. The 32-year-old also said that it wouldn’t have been surprising even if he was let go last year.
“We are good friends, and this made it even more difficult. It is because we got along very well. With that being said, if you look at our results from last year, I’m not surprised. The reason is we didn’t perform that well. I’m not saying that he was a problem. If either of us was getting fired we wouldn’t have been surprised. Last year, the performance was not there. We were very inconsistent and had little issues here and there. The team was eventually going to push for something. What that change was going to be? We never knew. But yeah, I wasn’t 100 percent surprised,” Daniel Suarez explained.
