Corey Heim's Kansas win—Is he the future star of NASCAR we should all be watching?

Teamwork makes the dream work. Just ask Corey Heim, who secured his sixth Truck Series win of the season at Kansas Speedway. The Kubota Tractor 200 was the last Round of 10 fixture and the top eight drivers will now travel to Talladega Superspeedway, hoping to survive another three races to keep their title hopes alive. It has been quite a season for the Tricon Garage driver, who is currently at the top of the driver standings and will be looking to build on that advantage in the remaining four races.

While Heim has made plenty of headlines after yet another dominant victory, the 22-year-old shared the credit for his success with his team, who have played an integral role in how his season has played out so far.

There was plenty of drama at Kansas Speedway with the stakes being higher than ever. ThorSport Racing driver Ty Majeski was in the lead going into the final lap but ran out of fuel at just the wrong time. This allowed Corey Heim to overtake his rival’s No. 98 Ford F-150 to secure yet another Truck Series victory. The Georgia native was in the right place at the right time to capitalize on the opportunity to enter Victory Lane. However, none of that would have been possible without his team, who devised a great race strategy and gave Heim a lightning-quick No. 11 Toyota to get the result on the 1.5-mile oval.

Sharing his views about the race, Corey Heim told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, “We were by far the best Truck tonight.” Expressing gratitude towards his team for the race result, he added, “I’ve always had 100% confidence in these guys regardless of whether it’s a track I’ve previously struggled at or not. They’ve done such a great job at being resilient and always bringing the best of their equipment. Once again, just proved that today. Great truck in the spring, thought we could make it a little bit better and we proved that today.”

Corey Heim didn’t have the best start coming into the weekend. He was forced to start the race in 33rd place after cutting a tier in practice and hitting the outside wall, but that didn’t dampen his spirits. He quickly gained track positions in the first 30 laps and climbed up to third by the end of Stage 1, securing eight points in the process. Such was the pace on his No. 11 Toyota Tundra that he swiftly climbed two more positions to finish first after the opening 60 laps and maintained his position by the end of Stage 3.

Have an interesting take?

Heim knows Kansas Speedway’s layout like the back of his hand, having won on the 1.5-mile tri-oval earlier this season. And with a fair bit of luck, he managed to do the sweep this time around. He led 64 laps of the race, on a track where the lead was exchanged a staggering 10 times amongst three drivers. Victory at the Kubota Tractor 200 was Corey Heim’s 11th of his career, a testament to not just his racing prowess but how well the No. 11 Toyota team works together to get results.

Given how dominant his season has been, it’s not surprising that there is plenty of speculation surrounding Corey Heim’s future. The youngster is one of the hottest prospects in the motorsports world and is touted to be a future Cup Series driver. Having spent four seasons in the Truck Series, could it finally be time for the Georgia native to make a jump into one of NASCAR’s higher tiers? According to a prominent insider, the answer is yes and no.

Fox Sports journalist Bob Pockrass believes that Heim will continue racing in the Truck Series as a full-time driver in 2025, potentially as the reigning champion. However, he also believes that the youngster will be competing part-time in the Xfinity Series, just as he has for Sam Hunt Racing during the 2024 season. Responding to a fan’s query about the Tricon Garage driver’s future, Pockrass said, “Would expect Heim to be full trucks next year with select Xfinity races.”

Corey Heim has all the talent to make his mark in the Cup Series, but with age on his side, it would be better if he takes his time to hone his racing craft and develop as a driver. When the time is right, the Georgia native will get an opportunity to compete at the highest level, and given his skill, it won’t be beyond the realm of possibility that he can give the likes of Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott a run for their money.
