After last year’s breakthrough performance and wins from Tyler Reddick, the team had proven their competitive spirit. Although Reddick is moving on, the team found the perfect match in Kyle Busch to continue their winning ways. Richard Childress recognized Busch’s contributions and expressed a desire to keep him with the team for years to come, envisioning a legacy of triumph.
Speaking to the media after winning at the World Wide Technology Raceway with the #8 of Kyle Busch, Richard had nothing but praise for his star driver. “Kyle has been really — he’s such a pleasure to work with. Everybody says, ‘Man, how y’all going to get along?’ Same questions they asked me about, ‘You and Dale won’t last six months.’ We lasted 20 years. I want to keep Kyle here, and hopefully, we can end his career when he gets ready to.”
When asked about the physical altercation with Busch all those years ago, Childress added, “Yeah, we put that totally behind us. We talked about it. That was one of the first things we talked about. That’s history. We’ve both grown a lot. I know I’ve grown up. I’ve grown older, but I’ve grown up, too. There’s an old song out there, ‘I’m still growing up but I’m getting older.”

Kyle Busch also resonated the same sentiments in his post-race interviews when asked about how they have come so far after having a bitter past. “Yeah, I mean, people change. The relationship that I have now, and the effort that’s gone into securing me, to get me to go to RCR. The discussions and talks that happened there. Being able to get there and have some really strong runs winning right out of the gate at Fontana was great for us a really big morale booster.”
He continued, “(Crew chief) Randall Burnett and the guys can do a better job as well. We just all continue to strive and work hard and bounce off of each other in order to come out and have the best possible stuff every time we hit the racetrack.”
