Sunday’s blockbuster show at the Atlanta Motor Speedway had a high possibility of going south. With forecasts of dark clouds and thunderstorms approaching the track, there were already fears over a suspension of the race. The race was shortened, and the cars were asked to pit during the 185th lap.
The possibility of rain interfering in the race also created desperation among the drivers to increase the tempo and move faster for points. On the other hand, the pressure at the offices responsible for the event kept increasing. Speaking about the same, NASCAR Senior VP Elton Sawyer lets out the reasoning behind not stopping the race earlier.

NASCAR’s Senior Vice President says he believed they could’ve completed the race in Atlanta
With the weather turning cloudy, the effect of the conditions started to show on the track. The race was filled with multiple contacts and crashes, even for winner
who overcame a penalty and a wreck in the second stage. Other parts of the track also experienced accidents involving Denny Hamlin, Alex Bowman, Kyle Larson, and Ross Chastain.
Speaking about their predictions about the proceedings of the race with a change in circumstances, Sawyer said, “The initial forecast looks like we were probably 10 or 10:30 get that weather, so at that point, we felt like, you know starting when we’re dead and we should be okay and not need to move that up. And there’s a lot of things that go into that decision-making and plans that need to change, just like we didn’t feel the need of this one.
Reflecting on the outcome of the decision on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, he added, “Hindsight, yes you know the learnings after the event, so yeah, we should have with the information we had leading into the event, we felt like we were gonna be in a good place to get the entire distance. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.”

Fans have not taken the short-sighted nature of the decision lightly at all. Expressing their disapproval of his comments, they have called for better management in such cases. One fan was livid at the decision and called Sawyer a liar.
What a liar the national weather service predicted rain since saturday for rain on sunday night. They were even in a level 1 out of 5 for severe weather.

Another fan was quick to point out Mr Sawyer’s record of promises. Calling him out for not being decisive enough to make quick moves, they called for a change in administration: “Everytime Elton opens his mouth it’s just a bunch of excuses. We can do better we will do better blah blah blah. Time for a change”
He’s become such an excuse maker, it’s time for a change! Get someone with a backbone and not a yes man!

The level of mismanagement at a venue that is being touted to give way to two NASCAR races from now on will hurt the fans. One of the fans tweeted about the repetitive nature of such blunders. There have been a good amount of blunders this season, including Bubba’s radio being hijacked by miscreants and the power outage at World Technology Center. The fans have had enough of it. As one fan put it, “Just another BS excuse. Just like every week.”
