Today’s stock car racing is undeniably different from how it used to be back in the day. While current drivers are backed by reliable manufacturers and a hard-working team always supporting them, drivers from yesteryears had to do it the hard way. Forged in the fire, during the era of self-reliance, aspiring drivers apparently had to do it all – from building a race car to driving it across the line to make their mark.
Reflecting on this very aspect, NASCAR veteran Kenny Wallace recently opened up on YouTube about an exchange with an intoxicated man who was trying to undermine his achievements. Wallace then went on to explain to the critic about old-school drivers, highlighting the fortitude and resilience they had to build.

Before the current era of independent manufacturers and big league sponsors, older generations had to rely on themselves more to reach the racetrack. Working on their cars and themselves, they had to work their way up much more differently than how it is today. And perhaps there’s a faction of people who don’t realize that right away.
Recently, Kenny Wallace came face-to-face with a drunk man who kept pestering him about his NASCAR journey, asking, “How did you make it to NASCAR?” While the question seems harmless in itself, one cannot undermine the tone it carried, as was pretty apparent by the veteran’s imitation. When Wallace informed him that the question was impossible to answer, owing to the sports’ evolvement, the fan kept interrupting him. “And it dawned on me. This son of a b***** is heckling me!” Wallace said, he realized.
However, the 60-year-old was quick to provide the man with a reality check. Kenny said, “I looked at him and said, well, ‘We built our own m***rf**ing race car, we built our own race car’.”
However, Wallace soon caught onto the man’s motive of trying to make him confess something that might not be true. “This guy was 38-years-old, he was from this new generation. He was trying to get me to say I took money, and I gave to somebody and they let me drive their car,” Wallace divulged.
While the heckling might cloud the veteran’s mind as an unfortunate memory, his most recent stint on the racetrack is sure to give him some much needed respite! Wallace’s popularity shone through recently as he participated at the Gateway Dirt Nationals on Thursday.

In a nutshell, the arena was electric with energized fans raining down cheers on the veteran. Wallace was the main attraction at this year’s Gateway Dirt Nationals race at The Dome. Though the driver had the home-ground advantage with the race going down in his backyard at Downtown in St. Louis, the driver got turned sideways in the closing laps of the race, essentially missing a great finish.

However, Wallace did not let the odd ending get to his head. In fact, what blew his mind instead was the crowd’s energy. The veteran even climbed out of his car and signalled his appreciation to the wild crowd, making them go bonkers. Elaborating on the unforgettable moment on his YouTube channel, the veteran detailed his emotions.

He said, “Downtown St. Louis, they have not disappointed. They’ve been unbelievable, off the charts, crowd on feet, that’s the new one.”
The video was a reminder that some racers always stay in fans’ hearts even if they are not actively racing anymore. It was also definitely nostalgic for fans to see a driver from an older generation try his luck on the racetrack again!
