St. Louis just revived one of its beloved traditions. The Gateway Dirt Nationals made a grand return to the Dome at America’s Center on December 14, boasting the title of America’s largest indoor oval dirt track. This year, the event really spread its wings, with a record-breaking 31 states throwing their hats into the ring – the first time in its history! But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. For Carson Hocevar and Jason Feger, it was a case of “when the going gets tough, the tough get going.” These two found themselves in a bit of a pickle, crossing paths not once, but twice during the race.

Unfortunately, this double trouble meant neither of them saw the checkered flag. After the race was over, Jason Feger pointed the finger at Hocevar for kicking off the chaos. But he reckoned they were square by the end, suggesting that what goes around comes around.

With only six laps to go and already two laps behind, Carson Hocevar’s car clashed with Jason Feger’s, leading to a damaged tire and side for Feger. It was absolutely clear that Feger’s race was over then and there. But he wasn’t about to let Hocevar off the hook that easily. Lying in wait, Feger seized his moment of revenge. As Hocevar zoomed by, Feger’s car lunged to the left, striking Hocevar’s vehicle with such force that it left part of it dangling, almost as if it were hanging on for dear life.

When asked about the incident, Feger didn’t mince his words. “It’s just, if I’m not going to finish, you’re not going to finish,” he said. He described the move as “dumb”, pointing out their neck-and-neck position just two laps into the race. “He just ran up over my left rear on a start, gave me a flat tire so I knew I was done. I figured if he took me out I was gonna make sure he didn’t finish too.”

However, when the reporter prodded him about a potential heart-to-heart with Hocevar, Feger’s response was cut and dried. “I don’t think, I mean, it’s, it is what it is, I mean, my… I guess in my mind, we are even now… I mean, he knows he screwed up, I’m sure, so. That’s just part of racing, you know?” he shrugged.

On the flip side, the greenhorn Carson Hocevar claimed to be naive to the series, which caused confusion. He appeared to be in the dark about where things went south.

Carson Hocevar, seeing things through his lens, felt that Jason Feger’s response was a bit over the top. “Their retaliation after is, it’s a little much just in the fact like he landed at my helmet right, like it was really high on the… You know, if I had my hand out or anything, you know, that almost takes your hand off, right? So that’s a bit much, you know, maybe a little dude next time, you know hit me in the back, not my… I could not go for my head.”

At the same time, Hocevar admitted he’s still finding his footing in the series, not quite sure of the dos and don’ts. “So I tried to poke my left for you just kind of the bottom just where it was clean. And hit the inside wall and like instantly checked up as quick as I could. But then his left rear, I think was flat right away. So apologize to them, right? If I did something wrong.”

Hocevar seems unfazed by the ripples he’s causing, whether in the truck series or at the Gateway Dirt Nationals. It’ll be intriguing to watch him in the Cup races, especially now that sponsors like Zeigler Auto Group are backing him and the No. 77 team for multiple events in the 2024 season. It’s a scenario ripe with anticipation to see how he handles the big league.
