Ever since the dawn of social media, we’ve gotten to know a lot more about some of NASCAR’s biggest icons. The community is now able to get an inside look into what their favorite drivers like to get up to besides battling it out on the oval. Out of all the content and wholesome moments we’ve gotten, perhaps none have been as insightful as the ones featuring Richard Petty.
While the King is well known for his on-track dominance and never-ending enthusiasm, what fans didn’t know was that the most winningest NASCAR driver likes to keep things simple at the dinner table. Once again, the Petty Family Racing channel on YouTube gave us some intriguing content about Richard Petty‘s favorite meal. And what better way to accurately portray his recipe than to go on a cooking journey with The King himself?

It’s no secret that motorsport is as physically demanding as it gets when it comes to careers, and a balanced diet is equally important to stay fuelled. Shedding light on his solution to the energy depletion caused by races, Petty creates a simple meal consisting of fresh veggies, corn, and steak. He shared, “This is what I usually do on Monday night. When I come home the race and stuff and get ready for the rest of the week so I prepare a lot of this kind of stuff and put it in the fridge and get it out when I get ready to cook my next meal.”
Kicking things off, Petty cuts up the bread into evenly cut slices and tosses them in a ziplock bag to keep them fresh. Moving on to the spring onions. Petty carefully cut off the roots with a bunch of them tied together, then proceeds to chop off the excess from the top, and then proceeds to place them in an airtight container.
On the vegetable side, Petty begins to prepare his salad with fresh cucumbers from his garden. A pattern starts to emerge as Petty puts the cucumbers in another bowl: everything has got to stay fresh! Next on the chopping block are red bell peppers cut into bite-sized chunks and packed into a container, followed by some tomatoes. He lets everything sit overnight, getting back to cooking antics on Tuesday.
The first thing on the agenda is for Petty to get everything out from the previous night and then move on to fixing up the corn. The King sure loves his butter, lathering the cob with a generous layer before putting it in the oven for a few minutes. Last but not least, it’s time for the steak to go into the grill, with Petty’s preference visibly on the rarer side.
Once everything is prepared, Petty uses a giant dinner bowl with his grandchildren’s footprints painted on it to prepare the meal. Starting with the vegetables, Petty plates the bowl with his favorite ingredients to create the perfect balanced meal. Pairing it with some frozen wine, Petty quickly speeds off to enjoy his freshly prepared meal!

Before some of our favorite racers headed to the 2017 Daytona 500, they revealed their secret to maintaining energy throughout the weekend. Dale Earnhardr Jr was one of the odd few who liked to spice things up just before a grueling race. He was quoted by USAToday,”I like to put some turkey bacon in [the eggs], mix it up, scramble them and put some hot sauce in there and get them spicy,”
On the other hand, not everyone in the Earnhardt family could handle the heat like Junior! His nephew, Jeffrey Earnhardt shared just before his debut Daytona 500, “I ate spicy food before a race one time, and it was a horrible idea. Spicy food does not sit well whenever it gets hot and you’re out driving around at 200 mph.”
Chris Buescher was a big fan of his Cheerios breakfast while Joey Logano had an exceptionally well-thought-out energy gainer. Logano’s go-to would be scrambled eggs with turkey bacon paired with avocado and yogurt! On the beverage side of things, Denny Hamlin preferred two percent milk, whilst Brad Keselowski was a fan of orange juice and water.
