The Talladega Superspeedway is notorious for its unpredictability and propensity for causing wrecks. During the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs race, many of the drivers found that out the hard way, including Kyle Busch, Joey Logano, and Kevin Harvick. In the end, pole man Denny Hamlin survived the carnage to win the race.
The multiple wrecks only served to extend the race time even further and made it the messiest and longest race in Talladega. However, on the second and final overtime restart, Hamlin pulled off a beautiful move.
He swept through in a three-wide pass out of the final turn to win the race. The race dragged on because of a record 13 cautions, which nearly eliminated every playoff contender.

However, the drama did not end there, as Denny Hamlin came under scrutiny for crossing the out-of-bounds line. This took place during the third overtime restart. Fortunately, he escaped punishment as it was accidental.
“They were crashing in front of us,” Hamlin said. “Obviously, I got forced down there.”
Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for Kyle Busch, as he got caught in an accident during the second overtime. This comes as a massive blow for the defending Cup champion, as he remains winless this season. To make matters worse, this puts him teetering on the edge of playoff elimination.

Crunch time for several drivers, including Kyle Busch
When the paddock heads to the Charlotte Roval, only eight drivers will leave that track in the Playoffs. After Talladega, the drivers in danger are Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Aric Almirola, and Austin Dillon.

Aside from Busch, Almirola and Bowyer wrecked in separate incidents, with the latter bringing out a red flag. All in all, the above four drivers will have to bring everything in their arsenal to sneak through.
Meanwhile, there was utter jubilation for Erik Jones, who finished second to Hamlin in a Joe Gibbs Racing 1-2. Ty Dillon completed the Top-3, with William Byron and Chase Elliott in the 4th and 5th.

Admittedly, Denny Hamlin played the tactical game and waited for the rest of the NASCAR Cup field to implode. Once the worst of the carnage had passed, he made inroads towards the front.
“I hate to say it, but you have to play the game. You have to get to the next round,” Hamlin said. “To win the championship, you have to win the last race and you have to get to the last race. For us, we played the strategy to play the numbers to make sure we got locked in.”
