The ROVAL race on Sunday witnessed a chaotic finish. However, with a whole bunch of things going on during the last 4 laps, what Cole Custer did cost him a huge deal. Recently NASCAR penalized Custer for his actions at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. But who knew that the first person to actually witness his deeds was Hendrick Motorsports crew chief, Cliff Daniels, and Kyle Larson?

NASCAR penalized Cole Custer under section 4.4C alleging that he manipulated the race results. While on the backstretch of the final laps, Cole Custer slowed down his car which led to Chase Briscoe gaining more points. As a result, Briscoe accumulated two more points than Kyle Larson and made it to the Round of 8 cutoffs.

After the race, NASCAR announced that they will be reviewing data and audio/video transmissions to assess the entire situation. And on Tuesday, they fined Cole Custer $100,000 and levied a 50 points penalty. Although the team will appeal the decision, the governing body said that the fine will not change the playoff field.

However, even before the situation came to light, Kyle Larson’s crew chief Cliff Daniels noticed it. According to a radio transmission recording posted on YouTube, Daniels can be heard telling Larson that Custer will do anything to mess up their position.

Since Chase Briscoe and Kyle Larson were already tied up, Custer’s actions were a tiebreaking deal at that moment. In the clip, Daniels said over his radio; “The goal of the #41 is just to mess us up the most that he possibly can. Just so everyone knows.”
