During a race at the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout, there was a wild finish at the line. Heading into the final lap, Emerson Axsom was battling with Jeffrey Newell for the race lead. Newell hugged the inside line like his life depended on it, while Axsom stuck to the outside lane.

In the end, Axsom’s efforts went in vain as Newell edged him out at the line. However, the drama was just beginning, as Axsom had a huge crash just after the chequered flag. As it turned out, he never lifted his foot off the throttle and crash into the wall, sending his car into a series of flips. Eventually, the mangled car came to a rest, and the rollercoaster was finally over for the shaken driver.

Neither driver eased off the throttle and Axsom clipped Newell’s left rear wheel. Obviously, this sent Axsom’s car tumbling out of control. The good news was that Axsom was able to clamber out on his own power and walk away, largely unhurt. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Newell was able to celebrate his victory in the race after barely beating Axsom.

What did Axsom say after the Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout?

Speaking after the race, Axsom said, “Just hard racing. I was trying to get everything I could and came out one spot short. Made it hard on my guys, so I honestly should have just lifted there but it’s all good.”

It was a bit of a disappointing result, considering that he won the Stock Non-Wing Golden Driller event. During that particular event, Axsom fended off a spirited attack from Alex Bright to win the event. That win against Bright ensured his second Golden Driller. Recently, the driver announced that he intended to compete in the USAC National Sprint Cars on a full-time basis.
