There is no shortage of action-packed drama when Clint Bowyer is around. In the opening stage of the NASCAR Cup Series race at the Martinsville Speedway, a battle of sorts brewed between Bowyer and his Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Aric Almirola. Almirola tagged Bowyer early in the stage and Bowyer got his payback later.

It all started a bit over 70 laps into the race. Bowyer lost his grip and went for a spin, which initially looked like a tire rub. It then came to light that Almirola, driving in the no. 10 car, tagged him from behind, sending the veteran driver spinning.

What happened after Aric Almirola tagged Clint Bowyer?

“I spun out because my f**king teammate hit me in the left rear quarter panel,” an agitated Bowyer said on his team radio.

Bowyer shrugged off the incident and kept going in the race. Later, with 21 laps to go in the first stage, Bowyer saw his opportunity on a restart and tagged Almirola from behind.

Bowyer is running the second to last race of his NASCAR Cup Series career, and the final race at Phoenix is set to be an emotional race for him.

What next for Bowyer in NASCAR after the Phoenix race?

At the end of the season, Bowyer will retire from racing and will move to the broadcasting side of the business. He will join the commentary booth for Fox Sports next year, and fans will hear a lot more of Bowyer than seeing him on the track.

However, this was not his original plan. Bowyer said recently, after announcing his decision, that if the commentary opportunity did not come his way, he probably would have continued driving.

“I love being a part of this sport,” Bowyer said about the same. “That was so important for me. I didn’t want to just retire. If this opportunity with FOX didn’t come to the table, I was going to be in a car somewhere, somehow,” he added.

Even if not in a race car, Bowyer was always certain of staying in the sport. “I wasn’t just going to quit and run off into the sunset because I like this sport and I wanted to find my way and future in it, and luckily this happened,” he said further.
