Everyone pretty much knew the script for the 2024 NASCAR Awards. But the mere sight of drivers suited up and walking the red carpet is something that draws the attention of the race fans. Although the likes of Joey Logano, Chase Elliott, and Rajah Caruth bagged their honors, it was the surprise appearance of Shaquille O’Neal that became one of the highlights of the banquet show.

The NBA icon, apart from his expert opinion on the sport of basketball, has also transitioned into the role of a DJ. This was evident at the NASCAR Awards as DJ Diesel worked his magic and got the fans grooving on the dance floor.

This isn’t the first time that Shaq has been associated with NASCAR and live events. Last year, the 4-time NBA champ revved up the crowd at Sonoma Raceway. His unique genre of music has even struck chords with EDM artists, and he even made his debut at the Tomorrowland music festival.

However, this time around, Michael Jordan’s star driver and his wife were the ones who enjoyed grooving to his tunes at the Charlotte Convention Center. Tyler Reddick and his wife Alexa DeLeon went up to the DJ booth and had a good time grooving to the beats by DJ Diesel.

The 23XI Racing star took to his Instagram and shared a clip of him enjoying his time on stage with Shaq and Alexa. “I like this DJ! @shaq 😎.” Not only that, Shaquille O’Neal greeted Cup Series champ Joey Logano and the Penske boys. Logano’s teammate Austin Cindric shared the selfie he clicked with Shaq on his Instagram account.

Nascarasm, who is well known for his sarcastic jokes on everything and anything about the sport, also met with Shaq. And he certainly lived up to his name when he posted a photo of him meeting with Shaq on Instagram. “That’s Shaquille O’Neal (Third from left) #NASCAR,” he wrote in the caption of the post.

The awards ceremony was much more than just drivers and attendees having a good time. Apart from the championship driver being recognized for their brilliance on the racetrack, we had Greg Biffle, who took home the Myers Brothers Award.

Greg Biffle won the Myers Brothers Award for good reason. You see, the award “recognizes individuals and/or groups who have provided outstanding contributions to the sport of stock car racing.” The Myers Brothers Award has been present annually since 1958. Every year a panel of NMPA members votes to decide on the recipient of the award, and this year Gregg Biffle’s selfless contribution rose above all.

In a humble moment, Biffle took to X to show his gratitude for receiving the award. He wrote, “Honored to be named the @NMPAonline 2024 Myers Brothers Award Recipient at the  @NASCAR Banquet last night it was such a surprise !! Thank you.” 

Although the driver retired from NASCAR in 2016, he made a massive impact on the NASCAR community with his contributions during Hurricane Helene. As the calamity ravaged across North Carolina, among other states, Biffle was on the front lines battling the devastating effects of the disaster.

The former NASCAR Xfinity and Truck Series champ was one of the first ones to reach out to the communities stranded after the devastation of Hurricane Helene. Biffle used his private helicopter to deliver aid to the communities cut off from the rest of the world. Because the driver has over 20 years of experience as a pilot, he took his helicopter out, dropping relief material and rescuing people stuck in flooded areas. Biffle’s contributions were crucial as roads to access certain parts of the states were flooded.

Biffle wasn’t alone in his. What started as a one-off trip soon became a huge movement that saw corporations and private companies fund this relief work. NASCAR teams joined in the fray, with Joe Gibbs and Rick Hendrick sending their teams’ respective helicopters to aid the relief effort. Speedways across states became safe havens for people looking for shelter. It was a moment when NASCAR gave back to the community.
