Ross Chastain's warning to Austin Dillon—Is this the start of a new NASCAR rivalry?

It has been 4 days since the Richmond race and people are still discussing the controversial win. The media have bombarded Austin Dillon. Everyone wants to know what was going through his mind as he took out Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin. Everyone knows that if Dillon had not taken out Logano, there was no chance he could win the race. And that’s exactly what happened. Ross Chastain had his say on the matter, though.

According to many critics, Austin Dillon was desperate for the win. So, winning a race while being P32 is extremely uncommon. So after doing what he had to do to secure the win and a playoff spot, many believe the other drivers will look for payback. Ross Chastain was called to talk about the racing incident in the latest video on Rubbin Is Racing’s YouTube channel. With that, he gave some expert advice to Dillon.

In the Three Wide section of the Rubbin Is Racing podcast, Ross Chastain was video-called to discuss the Cookout 400. At that time, he was asked about the controversial finish. After discussing the incident with Michael McCarthy, Chastain was asked an intriguing question from Daniel DiOrio. He spoke about what he would do if he were in Dillon’s place about other drivers looking for payback in the upcoming races. So, Ross Chastain is the ideal person to approach due to the significant criticism he faced following the Brickyard 400.

DiOrio spoke about the incident to the Trackhouse Racing driver and asked, “One other thing that I loved was that you were seemingly one of the only guys on the other side of the fence. I saw you run up to Austin Dillon’s car. Congratulate him. I also saw that from Kyle Busch, but do you think there’s any advice you would have for Austin Dillon now, moving forward, as he might be, you know, receiving a large payback or anything like that?”

Ross Chastain decided to take no heat from the question as he explained, “Oh gosh, no, Austin doesn’t need any advice from me. But in my experience, moving forward from those incidents, you get blamed for everything. Yeah, we saw it. I mean, the memes that happened at Richmond. I don’t know which race it was—if it was a year ago, maybe Spring Race last year.”

Chastain brought up an incident from when the internet put him under fire, saying, “I mean, I caused the dinosaurs to go extinct. So, I mean, there were all kinds of crazy memes out there. So Austin might get lumped into that. I don’t understand how the internet works as far as what starts happening and why people jump on bandwagons. But yeah, in my experience, I just start getting blamed for it raining and everything else under the sun.”

Although Chastain did not drop some direct advice for the RCR driver, he did talk about how netizens. They now follow meme culture and blame drivers for any mistake they have made. With this, the driver of the No. 1 Camaro did not give Dillon any direct advice while telling him to be wary. Like most times, the internet could blow things out of proportion. However, advice aside, the Trackhouse Racing driver is in for a challenging 3 races as he is still to find himself a spot in the cutoffs.

Ross Chastain feels the pressure as he clings to the last playoff spot in the 2024 NASCAR season. With just four races left in the regular season, Chastain is currently right under the playoff cutline. Although this puts him in the danger zone for now, there is no telling what could happen in the next 3 races.

Austin Dillon’s playoff spot was first granted, but it was later stripped away from him because of the collisions, and despite his win, he will not be making it into the playoffs, leaving 4 open spots for the playoffs.

To get ahead of the competition, Chastain and his team need to find a way to score as many points as possible in the next few races to beat Chris Buescher, who is tied with him at this point. Chastain explained that, despite the pressure, he insists that he and his team can’t try any harder now than they did before the season break.
