The only competing racer of African-American descent wins the playoff race over championship favorites. This remarkable development almost made headlines after this weekend’s race at the Texas Motor Speedway. 23XI Racing‘s Bubba Wallace won his first pole of the season and led a career-high 111 laps in the fourth playoff race of the Cup Series. Alas, a late-race restart pushed William Byron ahead of the #23 driver.

Is the Hendrick Motorsports driver simply more skilled? Did Bubba Wallace succumb to the pressure of the playoffs? Veteran racer Kenny Wallace has nuanced reasoning for anyone underestimating the 29-year-old’s legitimacy.

Bubba Wallace qualified for the playoffs without winning a single race in the regular season and was placed 12th in the first round of eliminations without winning the playoff races. On the surface, one could dismiss the #23 driver’s winning capability based on these numbers. But if a magnifying lens was procured to read between the lines, it would reveal an underlying consistency that regularly accumulated stage points to stand among the best of this season.

This was especially visible in the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400. Established intermediate driver Kyle Busch crashed out early and predicted winner Kyle Larson lost the battle against the racetrack. However, Wallace continued to excel. And right when he could taste victory, the winning platter was taken away from him. With only six laps to go, Hendrick Motorsports’ #24 driver overtook Wallace’s hard-earned lead.

Disappointment rang among his stunned fanbase. But there was a section of the racing fandom who have overtly expressed their disapproval of the racer. Particularly, in the older generations. Some hurled their usual criticism when Kyle Larson suddenly spun while he raced next to Wallace. Even when the #5 Crew Chief categorically denied Wallace’s involvement in the incident. Kenny Wallace only has one message for his namesake’s irrational detractors.

“You’re only doing that because you’re mean.” In the Kelly Wallace show, the former racer summarized the #23 driver’s Texas performance. Enlaced with words of encouragement, Kenny Wallace explained, “Bubba Wallace, he’s dominating, he’s going to win the race. Late race restart, he doesn’t get a good restart and William Byron comes off at Turn 2, sweeps underneath him, and wins it all. William Byron simply wins the race.

A lot of you like to rough him up because of obvious reasons. I say that’s bad, I don’t approve of that…He’s really good, he’s in the Top 12 of these playoffs and he’s rolling.” But why did he not win the race when he was this close? Known as one of the most popular NASCAR racers, Kenny Wallace could relate it to his own emotional experience.

With a substantial social media following, Kenny Wallace is hardly unfamiliar with vehement criticism. Despite his retirement in 2015, his thoughts and opinions continued to garner fan attention. Owing to the Xfinity racer’s congenial personality and previous popularity, the brightest smiles often hide the deepest pain inside. This is why Kenny Wallace recognized the susceptibility behind the 23XI driver’s post-race speech.

After over 260 laps of skilled maneuvers, Bubba Wallace felt he made a tactical error in re-starting on the top lane next to the #24 car. But instead of a split-second advantage accorded to Byron, the #23 driver ended the interview on a defeated note. “I Choked”, said the talented playoff racer. Years of wisdom and empathetic awareness made Kenny Wallace detect the coping mechanism employed by the rueful driver. Kenny Wallace sensibly pulled out the protected covering from the self-deprecating statement.

He said, “Bubba’s a good person, got thrown to the wolves, and had to react because of the situation. So Bubba’s got a defense mechanism. I’m not saying that’s good…Bubba does a little bit of what I do. So they interviewed Bubba right after the race. ‘Bubba, what happened’? I choked, I’m no good, I don’t deserve to win. Okay, I exaggerate. But he did say, ‘I choked’. I did not get the job done. Bubba’s defense mechanism is to get you before you get him. Because he knows what everybody’s about to [say], ‘Bubba choked! He can’t get it done!”
