It is not every day that you get to do something that brings great honor to your country. Winning in NASCAR for multiple years and with legendary drivers is one thing. But how about building something that would directly help out those who defend our land? That’s right, one fine NASCAR team decided to play its part in contributing something special to none other than the US Army.

GM Defense secured a $214.3 million contract from the U.S. Army to manufacture an initial batch of 649 ISVs.

But with the recent full-rate production approval could result in the acquisition of up to 2,593. The planned delivery for these vehicles would go on for the next 8 years.

The ISV is apparently based on the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 pickup truck. Obviously, it will be heavily modified to suit the requirement of the United States military.

However, the interesting point is that these cars are being built with base frames supplied by a NASCAR Cup Series team. That team is none other than Hendrick Motorsports. Seems like the US Army is getting racing geniuses involved to further strengthen their defense.

What are the features of this ISV?

The high-performance Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) has been designed as an off-road troop transport. It has finally received the green light for full-rate production. With a weight of 5,000 pounds, the ISV is built using 90% off-the-shelf components. This is a tactic that significantly lowered manufacturing expenses.

Designed to accommodate nine passengers, the ISV features an open body and a retractable rollover protection system. Its design enables it to fit inside a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, be carried by a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, or be air-dropped from a cargo aircraft using a parachute.

Furthermore, a 2.8-liter turbo diesel engine powers the vehicle across various terrains. However, GM Defense has also developed a fully-electric model for assessment purposes.

The ISV has the potential to revolutionize troop transport. Since it would offer unparalleled off-road capabilities and easy integration with existing military transport systems. As the U.S. Army considers the acquisition of additional vehicles in the coming years, the ISV’s impact on military operations is expected to grow. With this in place, for at least a better part of a decade, it seems that Hendrick Motorsports would be actively playing their part in making efforts towards their country.
