What a letdown! After almost a year of anticipation about Kyle Busch’s participation at the 2024 Adelaide 500, Rowdy has been forced to withdraw just days before the official event reveal. The 39-year-old was expected to participate in the season-ending race in the land down under, and his decision to pull out has saddened the racing community.
Busch’s participation in the season ending race (set for November 14-17) was organized by Triple Eight and Supercars, along with the Adelaide event organizers. Richard Childress, hoping to improve Rowdy’s performance on road courses, initiated a collaboration with Erebus Motorsport so that the two-time Cup Series winner could participate in the event. While the series does not usually accept one-off entrants, they made an exception in Rowdy’s case, hoping his presence would help popularize the series, especially in the United States.
However, Busch was forced to pull citing an off-track commitment as the reason for his unavailability. As a result, the event’s schedule, along with promotional activities that were set to feature the NASCAR driver, was left in disarray.

The South Australian Motor Sport Board, which is an organizer for the Adelaide 500 expressed their disappointment by telling Speedcafe, “Due to timing and commitments, having an international Supercars Wildcard at the VAILO Adelaide 500 is being explored for 2025. We look forward to sharing more international off-track talent for the 2024 event soon, as we continue to build a motorsport mecca in the heart of Adelaide this November.”
Notably, Busch’s supercars aspirations were bolstered by his team owner Richard Childress. The 78-year-old visited Australia for the first time last year to witness last year’s race3, and in turn was left thoroughly impressed. With Supercars sensation Brodie Kostecki already coming over to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a Cup Series debut with RCR, Busch’s one-off transition only made sense.
At the time, Childress also seemed hopeful about the #8 driver chances: “We’ve talked to him some about coming. I think he might one of these days. He’d enjoy this. The track’s good, right, the kind of racing that he’d like. I think he’d do good over here.” But the stint was also going to be tough, as further mentioned by an RCR insider. “I think it’d be hard. He’d learn a lot, but it wouldn’t be easy. I’m not sure where he would run, but he wouldn’t come in and do what Shane did at Chicago. If he could run mid-pack, I think that’s a win,” the team’s engineer Andrew Dickeson said.
Busch’s sudden withdrawal has given rise to a storm of speculations as fans took to Reddit to discuss their theories!
Fans react to Busch pulling the pin on the Adelaide 500
Once the news became public that Kyle Busch’s hyped-up appearance in Australis was scrapped, fans took to social media and shared their views about the situation. One fan theorized that perhaps Kyle Busxch is set to leave the team. “Maybe an indication that he’s leaving RCR and will be working with a new team starting the day after the Cup finale, so he wants to get off on the right foot with them,” read the comment.
Notably, Busch had given a hint that he’s open to joining other Cup Series teams back in June. “I would say anything is possible, always…Certainly, if I was welcomed I would go back, if Hendrick welcomed me back I’d go back. But right now I’m at RCR with my group of guys and the deal I have right now in place. So, we’re trying to work and build this program and make RCR great again,” Busch had told Bob Pockrass.
With Kyle Larson recently claiming that he is a more versatile driver than Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen, one fan wrote that the Adelaide 500 could replace one Kyle with another in the land down under. The Reddit user said, “They should throw Larson in there so he can try to bolster his argument against Verstappen”. Echoing the sentiment that the event should find an alternate driver, another fan went on to say, “Hope they find someone else”.
On the other hand, one Redditor and Supercars fan explained what could be the possible reason by writing, “So, RCR had a sort of agreement with Supercars team Erebus Motorsport, due to their star driver Brodie Kostecki driving in an RCR car during last year’s cup race at the Brickyard. After this, there were heavy rumours that KFB would drive for Erebus in the 2024 Supercars finale, that being the Adelaide 500.
However, that deal was scrapped after Brodie, right after winning the championship, had a falling out with Erebus team boss Barry Ryan, which saw Brodie supposedly leave the team. And the team didn’t even try to address the situation, and instead swept it under the rug, which caused them to lose 3 of their biggest sponsors, and a bunch of other agreements with Erebus were terminated, including their connection to RCR”.
The 2023 Supercars champion had a public fallout with Erebus owing to serious allegations regarding the team environment. The team reportedly walked away from Kostecki’s NASCAR Cup Series agreement, leaving the latter stranded. Former owner of Triple Eight Race Engineering Roland Dane also alleged that a “toxic” work environment was to blame. So it’s understandable how the deteriorating equations may have affected Busch’s Supercars aspirations.

On a separate note, theorizing about Busch’s motivation for pulling out from the Adelaide 500, one fan expressed his views that it may have something to do with his wrist injury: “Off-track commitment to unf*** the wrist?” The 39-year-old sprained his left wrist in Lap 159 of the Brickyard 400 and has been seen wearing a brace ever since.
Lady luck simply hasn’t been on Kyle Busch’s side this season, has it? The Richard Childress Racing driver has endured a frustrating Cup Series season so far, with no wins and five DNFs. Being forced to miss out on the Adelaide 500 will just add to the list of misfortunes that Rowdy has been through in what can only be described as his worst NASCAR season in recent history.
