Infamous pit brawls, post-crash fistfights, and passionate fans – these things describe the vibrant atmosphere that the Bowman Gray Stadium represents. Aptly called the ‘Madhouse,’ this hallowed racetrack is particularly known for its feisty conflicts. While wild Modified races have usually created the drama here, now NASCAR is back to do the same after over five decades. Ryan Blaney is very excited – in spite of a wild history.

The last NASCAR race was the Myers Brothers Memorial in 1971. Now the half-mile short track will be back in the sport’s spotlight to host the Busch Light Clash race on February 2nd, 2025. However, Blaney and other drivers are anticipating wild occurrences on that date – and the Team Penske driver is eager.

Well, the No. 12 Ford driver is no stranger to flipping a bird or two. During the 2023 championship bid, Ryan Blaney was hot in pursuit of the title after winning in Martinsville. He came fully prepared in Phoenix and cracked the front row in no time. However, Ross Chastain made for an embarrassing situation for him. Despite being a non-playoff driver, the Trackhouse Racing driver won the race, with Blaney finishing second.

The latter flipped the bird at him in frustration. Yet Blaney has also been in Chastain’s place. And Bowman Gray Stadium was a witness to that. The 2023 Cup Series champion recently recollected that icky incident. Ryan Blaney raced at the ‘Madhouse’ when he was a teenager and got treated to its signature occurrence. He said, “I’ve raced there twice, in a bandolero and legend car, and my one vivid memory, I won in a bandolero when I was like 9 or 10. My one vivid memory was that there was a kid, younger than me, flip me off over the barrier when I was 10 and he was 7, and he was just doing what his parents did.”

Blaney continued that no personal grudge was involved – it was simply the essence of the place. “I don’t think he didn’t like me or anything. It was just, this is what we do. I vividly remember that going down the front stretch.”

Despite facing this racetrack humiliation at such a young age, Ryan Blaney embraced it. He even admitted that he is eager to see the wild side of Bowman Gray after so long. “I hope we get to see a few more going back there for the Clash. I bet we will.” Even his Cup Series rival and Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron placed the new venue over Los Angeles, just for its raw side. “A more intimate setting, a lot of fans yelling at you. The Coliseum was great but the fans were just watching the cars and wondering what’s happening. These fans know what’s happening and will be into it.”

And Byron’s teammate witnessed the drama up front, and he cherishes that memory.

A diehard fanbase – that is what the Winston-Salem racing facility treasures. While drivers spur vicious rivalries and demolition derbies, their fans are equally caught up in them. The pictures of school-age kids in the front row offering middle-finger salutes to their racing villains have nearly reached meme status. The gearheads who come to watch level up the gritty vibe of Bowman Gray Stadium accurately called the WWE of racing venues. And Kyle Larson, arguably the best Cup Series racer at present, witnessed this chaos up front. The HMS driver is a prolific dirt racer as well, and paved his racing career on dirt tracks initially. He paid visits to the Madhouse during his initial journey.

Kyle Larson raced there in the old K&N Pro Series. However, the most memorable experience for him was going to the stands. He recollected that fascinating experience recently, slipping a hopeful remark that it is the same at present. “I don’t remember much about the race but I remember I went into the stands to watch the Modifieds afterwards and that was my first time just being a fan there and it was everything I was hoping it would be. I had watched the Madhouse documentary thing and the crowd was rowdy. We went back once or twice since then but the crowd was really crazy that night so I hope it’s like that.”
