No race is complete without its fair share of wrecks, and the Atlanta race on Sunday delivered in this respect. While William Byron was rejoicing in his 4th win this season, fellow drivers like Corey LaJoie, Ross Chastain, and Ty Gibbs couldn’t say the same. They were on the receiving end of a wreck that botched the Sunday race for them. A stark contrast to the victory Ross Chastain celebrated in Nashville two weeks earlier, Sunday was not Chastain’s proudest moment. However, the Watermelon Man isn’t someone who gets jilted easily.

Ross Chastain and Ty Gibbs could only muster 35th and 34th positions, respectively, in a race shortened by thunderstorms and rain. But, what caused Chastain’s racecar to slide the way it did? How did the major clash with NASCAR icon Joe Gibbs’ grandson Ty Gibbs affect him? The Trackhouse Racing driver gave an account of the crash from his perspective.

Ross Chastain is confident that he’ll bounce back next week

After the Atlanta Motor Speedway renovation, several experts expected racing to be more aggressive at the track. The 2023 Quaker State 400 proved them right. When reporters asked how disappointed he was, the Trackhouse Racing star’s answer was quite simple. “I’m not too worried about it, I know we’ve got fast cars. We went for speed this weekend and we couldn’t quite grip the track so, we’ll be back,” he promised.

It is clear from his statement that he wasn’t taking the crash with Ty Gibbs to heart. “This is not a blip on a radar. This just gives me a head start on getting to work for next week.” It is perhaps this confidence and optimism that impresses and inspires his fans.

When asked about what he saw at the moment of the crash with Gibbs, Chastain said, “I didn’t see [much]. I saw a car sideways and when I went to the brake pedal, I got tight. I went up the track and tore the right front suspension off as I hit him [Gibbs] and flew through the air as I went by.” This seems to be one of the rare occasions where Ross Chastain was involved in a wreck, but he wasn’t one to initiate it.

It seems like Chastain’s Atlanta experience has been rough throughout the weekend, not just on race day. “The biggest thing for me is that we’ve lost grip in the track so we didn’t account enough. We didn’t put enough grip in our car, so I’m lifting constantly, every lap all weekend,” Chastain told Frontstretch.

He feels that such overlooking track conditions is definitely an obstacle in the path of competing at the top. “We just didn’t have enough grips so we’ll go to work and come back next year with a lot more grip. Pour the old grip bottle in the car and might mount a second bottle in for a little extra!” added Chastain with a touch of humor.

Ross Chastain just feels they need to work on the grip in tracks like Atlanta Motor Speedway. However, fans are still waiting for responses from Ty Gibbs and LaJoie, both of whose cars suffered considerable damage.
