There is already a lot of excitement surrounding the NASCAR Cup Series race in Chicago. Being the first-ever street course race in the history of the competition, it has grabbed everyone’s attention. While all the entities involved would like to stay updated on the event, mostly through social media, there’s a major issue at hand. This has instigated Elon Musk to intervene and justify the problem.

Without a doubt, Musk is one of the smartest businessmen in the world. That being said, the problem currently at hand seems to be a self-created one by the 52-year-old. However, the NASCAR community is having to face the aftermath.

Ever since acquiring Twitter in 2022, Elon Musk has brought about a number of changes. While some of them have been quite productive and helpful, many others haven’t quite received the best feedback from the users. Musk once again finds himself in a fix as he rolled out a new directive just recently.

Musk’s Twitter very recently applied “temporary limits” as the platform users complained of an outage. With error messages showing “rate limit exceeded,” it left everyone confused. In line with this, Musk tweeted, “To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits: – Verified accounts are limited to reading 6000 posts/day – Unverified accounts to 600 posts/day – New unverified accounts to 300/day.”

Now, the question is why is the Tesla CEO doing this? Musk himself presented the answer to this with a tweet. As per him, “Several hundred organizations were scrapping Twitter data extremely aggressively, to the point where it was affecting the real user experience.”

Ideally, scraping is disallowed by the terms and conditions set by Twitter. With such activities being carried out in large numbers, Musk was compelled to take some action and eventually came up with a cap on reading posts. While he provided an explanation or rather the thought process behind this, it is the common user who is deprived of access to information.

Naturally, the NASCAR community is also affected by this.

To plenty of people across the world, Twitter is their daily source of information. When it comes to sports fans, the social media platform is nothing short of a boon as it helps users find timely updates. The same goes for NASCAR, which is why fans have been left disappointed after Elon Musk’s latest announcement.

In light of this, well-known journalist Jeff Gluck tweeted, I’m getting the whole rate limit exceeded thing, but in case this gets through … pleasantly surprised how well the Chicago street race course itself has looked so far. Thought Xfinity practice would have tons of incidents, but the drivers are looking good out there.” While Gluck was successful in passing on the information, a number of fans expressed their unhappiness on Twitter with Musk’s decision.

“I follow live NASCAR races and have convos on Twitter with other fans live. Not anymore. Imagine a live severe weather outbreak or emergency and you can’t see or comment cuz you reached your limit. Also, If I was an advertiser I would not like the limits.”

Without a doubt, this decision is a huge blow to everyone involved in NASCAR, especially with the Chicago race so close now. All the fans, journalists, and teams will be hampered in their own way. Given the reaction, will Musk be forced to retract his decision? Well, only time can answer this question.
