NASCAR: Full Speed has gone viral. NASCAR’s insightful collaboration with Netflix to showcase the on- and off-track challenges of the playoffs has received a warm welcome from fans and drivers alike. However, before its release or the show’s production began, people had reserved their opinion. Among drivers, there was a feeling of uneasiness over letting cameras close into their personal lives. Being one of the nine drivers to feature in the show’s cast, Tyler Reddick understood this well.

Having been a relatively reserved person as compared to his 23XI Racing teammate Bubba Wallace and owner Denny Hamlin, the #45 Toyota driver needed some persuading to join the bandwagon. That was precisely where Hamlin came in and convinced his drivers to allow Netflix some more exposure to their personal lives. Having been the most highlighted driver in the series, it is no wonder that Denny Hamlin pushed Tyler Reddick to follow his approach.

Everything about 23XI Racing suited the theme of NASCAR: Full Speed. The owner duo of Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin are some of the most marketable names in the American sports industry. The team is a recent addition to the Cup Series grid and has become a dark horse for the championship in two years. #23 driver Bubba Wallace has previously opened up about his struggles in a documentary with Netflix.

Tyler Reddick was the only one not to have experienced these things before. Regarding the contrasting opinions about involvement in the docu-series, Reddick stated in an interview with FOX, “I certainly know that there were a number of drivers with a different perspective on the Netflix show. It’s something I talked to Denny about quite a bit. He came from the point of view that they are going to do this series with or without your involvement.

Denny Hamlin took a stern decision as a team owner and driver participating in NASCAR: Full Speed production. The documentary exemplifies how intricately Netflix can detail a driver’s persona. Denny understood that and relayed the same in the 23XI team meetings. Revealing more about it, Tyler Reddick said,

“At that moment, Denny was like, are you going to come to the competition meeting? Are we really going to do that? At the same time, if we’re not going to do that, they are going to find something else to cover and talk about. So the more you could open the doors and bring them around as you’re doing things, the better job they’ll be able to do in telling your story. Yes, Denny really took that approach farther than anybody.”

The series comprises five episodes lasting 45 minutes. These episodes don’t just cover the lives of drivers but also how teams operate under the pressure of the playoffs. The gambles and disappointments have been presented very well by the production team. Continuing the conversation, Reddick further expressed his happiness at the show’s success.

Announcing Netflix’s intentions to his team, Denny Hamlin brought a sense of urgency to the table. Having chased a championship for the entirety of his driving career, 23XI Racing’s co-owner had a list of things to divulge. However, the team has become a big part of his life in recent years. The documentary had multiple storylines to capture, including his relationship with Michael Jordan, Bubba’s playoff bubble battle, and Tyler Reddick’s rise to prominence in 2023.

Following Denny Hamlin’s explanation, it started to resonate with Reddick. He said, “I think our team did quite a bit of that as well. I was kind of on board with what he was trying to do there.”

Despite having his fair share of doubts before the shoot, Tyler Reddick is impressed by Netflix’s depiction of the playoffs. Putting his faith in the content platform for the years to come, the 28-year-old added, “It was cool to see how the show turned out. The more opportunities you give them to shoot, the better job they can do of telling that story.”
