The Daytona 500 is one of the most prestigious races in NASCAR and probably even in motorsports. Richard Petty is the all-time leader in the most wins category with seven triumphs. Meanwhile, Denny Hamlin is the only active driver with the most Daytona 500 wins. Since his last win in 2020 though, there has not been a Joe Gibbs Racing triumph at the Daytona 500. Not even a driver of Martin Truex Jr, Christopher Bell or even Kyle Busch’s caliber. It is safe to say, JGR youngster Ty Gibbs plans to change that this weekend.

Currently, he has qualified in 15th place, for the race, which has been postponed to Monday. Truthfully speaking, he is capable of winning, as he finished 4th in his maiden Daytona 500. The iconic superspeedway has been a happy hunting ground for Joe Gibbs Racing. Aside from Hamlin’s three wins, the last JGR triumph was Dale Jarrett’s in 1993, nine years before Ty Gibbs was born.

In conversation with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Gibbs talked about his ambitions. He said, “Oh gosh! I don’t know. You’re going to have to interview me if I get there. I think that would be really cool. Grew up coming to this race, I’ve been here for almost all Daytona 500s we won. All of Denny’s, you could say. I wasn’t alive for the other. JGR as an organisation won their first Daytona 500, I think it was their first race, if I’m not wrong. It was the first race, with Dale Jarrett. It’s a cool race for us. My dad always told me, they went to SteaknShake. I would love to do that. Love some SteaknShake, get myself some nice Number 6 with fries and Oreo shake, and I’ll be good. If I can do that with the 500 trophy I might just retire after that. You might just never see me again.”

Since his full-time debut last year, Gibbs has been improving by leaps and bounds. Sure, he has yet to reach Victory Lane, but the 2024 Daytona 500 should be the perfect place for a maiden Cup Series win. Naturally, the feat will not be easy, as Denny Hamlin is one of the favorites and a three-time winner. There are also 14 other drivers ahead of Ty Gibbs who are just as hungry for the win.
