Kyle Larson and his son Owen are both competing at the Tulsa Shootout. The festivities of “The Mecca of the Micros” began on December 30 and will last up to a week. So dirt race fans at the SageNet Center are expected to have a blast. However, seasoned sprint car driver Kyle Larson drew blanks in the races. Meanwhile, his son, Owen, racked up multiple wins.

Given the event’s format across different classes, Larson was in dire need of a win before the qualifiers for the main event began. Well, his 10-year-old son certainly did a good job winding him up and as a result, the HMS star was finally able to pick up a crucial win.

Owen certainly has learned a trick or two from Larson in overcoming challenges on the racetrack. This was evident from his heat race, where he started at the tail end of the field and ended up winning the race. Owen also took notes from Brexton’s heat race and implemented similar tactics to his run.

In the post-race interview, Owen also knew that he had more wins than Larson and took a cheeky jab at his father, stating, “I wanna remind him.” This was his response when the interviewer asked who would remind Kyle that he did not have as many wins as his son yet. Well, Yung Money certainly took notice of this and came through in his next heat race.

Michael Hubert led the charge in a heat race where Larson desperately sought a win. It all came down to last-lap drama. Driving the #83 sprint car, the HMS star put his foot on the gas in turns 3 and 4, coming onto the white flag. The two drivers were side by side going into the backstretch. It looked as if Hubert did recover after being pressured by Larson, but he once again opted to slide on the high lane and edged past Hubert. The difference between the two drivers was 0.048 seconds.

“Bittersweet because he’s the only guy in the building that works at Hendrick Motorsports. Wish he was in a different heat; he could’ve won that, but the format’s so tough, like you have to win, you know. Like four to one is not even good of a points total. At Chili Bowl that would be good so it puts a lot of pressure on the win. So just glad to do that and salvage what we could and go on all the qualifiers and try to do a good job.” Larson said in the post-race interview. Larson said after the race win.

On the other hand, Kyle Busch is having a good time on the dirt track as he racked up back-to-back heat race wins to prepare for the qualifiers.

Rowdy Busch is back to winning ways

Busch is participating in the Outlaw Class, the premier division, and if everything goes to plan, he could be pitted against Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell. He started his winning run in the heat race in the winged car and then did the same in the non-winged car. Given how tough the 2024 season was for Rowdy, he couldn’t contain the excitement he was feeling after winning his first race in a long time. For a change, he did have a big smile on his face.

He was almost unhinged and elated to perform the way he did on the racetrack. Even he was in disbelief that he pulled off a win by pushing his sprint car to the absolute limit. “Just worried about f—ing ripping the top or not… I got goosebumps; I don’t know, man that thing felt so good. It’s harder to get in and out of the car than it is to race. That motor dude, I’m telling you, it f—ing screams. Alright, I’m done for the day. Peace out.” An unfiltered Kyle Busch said after the race win at SageNet Center.

Race fans would certainly like to see the battle of the Kyles at the main event at the Tulsa Shootout. But the two drivers will have to clear the qualifiers to have a shot at the title.
