The NASCAR weekends had long closed its doors for the 2023 season after its showdown in Phoenix. As a result, the NASCAR community was left with nothing to quench its thirst for the sport, especially during the time of Thanksgiving. While other sports formats like the NFL were busily churning out high viewership during the festive season, NASCAR on the other hand was left with past highlights of the races.

As the racing community reeled from the absence of national-level races, it was the Late Model Stock car racing that came to the rescue, during Sunday’s Thanksgiving with its high-octane performances. Moreover, the final race of the Late Model Series at Southern National Motorsports Park was an epitome of chaos. Owing to this wreck fest, Kaden Honeycutt lashed out at his fellow drivers, after being dragged into contention.

It would have been the perfect prelude for Josh Berry, the defending winner of last year’s Thanksgiving Classic before he heads for his full-time Cup Series championship for the 2024 season. Moreover, to add the icing on the cake, it was Rodney Childers, Berry’s crew chief for the Cup Series, who had joined forces with the driver for Sunday’s race. However, the hopes of defending his title fell flat for Berry and he had to suffice with the third position.

Berry’s first blow came after he failed to earn the pole position for the race, and it was his Truck Series counterpart and Tom Usry’s Kaden Honeycutt, who secured his first pole position in two years. He seized the lead over Berry by 0.019 seconds. Although the driver had put up a brave fight in the ultimate showdown to dominate the lead, his plans eventually fell apart after Brenden Queen intentionally made contact.

The same contention ensued between Berry and Queen as well, and eventually brought Honeycutt into the mix. The No.17 driver tried to outmaneuver the other two in Turn 1, and Queen making contact with him, forced Honeycutt to the second position. Nestled between the two, Honeycutt was anything but happy and this was apparent in his post-race interview.

He expressed, “It was good, I felt like we were better than Brendan in there and then I just caught those two. I don’t know what the heck he was doing with Josh. He was all over the place. I think that was because Brendan was chasing around the race track. As soon as I got underneath both of them, Josh is doing it wrong. He was running straight through me in Turn 1 and that was it, I couldn’t get there.”

“I tried to go back to two, that’s all I had. I hate that. Every time I am racing someone,at the end of the race, they choose to use me up and run straight through me. There is nothing else that I can say about that. I am not gonna mention this next year, that’s who I am, I have come to this point where I have gotten raced by four-five people in this race that drove me so dirty, like Findley took out Fryar, just because he was so tired of being running in the middle straightway.”

“This is just stupid stuff like that. People need to get their points beat, honestly for doing stuff like that. Either way two second-place two big races in a row,” Honeycutt asserted.

Queen expressed, “I thought he(Honeycutt) was a lap down and caught me off-guard running 3 wide for the lead and I was trying to get all the info that he was on the lead lap. “

“I think that he was a little upset with me but I love (Kaden)Honeycutt to death man. I respect him so much and I felt like we got 3 wide and knocked me up a little bit and I got inside and I thought I barely got into him and I have to watch the replay, […] and  I’m so glad, so thankful we came out on top, man.”

Nevertheless, it was a hard-earned victory for Brenden Queen as he pocketed $15,000 as prize money. With the Late Model Stock series drawing its curtains on the season, it is to be seen what awaits Josh Berry in the Cup Series for the 2024 season.
