‘Promises are meant to be broken is perhaps the harshest truth that an individual can come across. While this adage may have been part and parcel of the daily drudgery, who would have thought that it might have held water in NASCAR? The person in question here is none other than the co-owner of Trackhouse Racing, Justin Marks. Whether it was Formula 1 champion Kimi Raikkonen or Supercars champion Shane Van Gisbergen, Marks’ experimentation has provided the perfect impetus to a season marked with surprises and uncertainties.

The young co-owner of Trackhouse Racing has assuredly grabbed enough limelight after garnering immense success with Project 91. However, it seems that Justin Marks has to go back on his words and walk on the backtrack, as he is set to break the promise made to Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez.

Marks’ Project 91 strives to attract motorsports drivers across the varied formats of motorsports and was able to fulfill its dreams when Supercar champion Shane Van Gisbergen drove the car up to the victory lane in Chicago and achieved his first title in his debut appearance. Nevertheless, after receiving immense success, Marks tried to pull the curtain back and devote more focus to the two full-time Cup Series cars.

Justin Marks considered the fact that Project 91 may have negative implications for the pursuit of the Cup Series championship. In the post-race interview in Chicago, Marks expressed, “Beyond probably 3 races [in a year], it starts to become a third team. It starts to really kind of drain — not drain, but take resources from the 1 [Ross Chastain] and the 99 [Daniel Suárez] car, which is what we’re really focused on at Trackhouse, getting both of those cars in the championship, being able to make a championship run.”

However, it was not long before Marks had to go back on his words, as the Kiwi is set to return to the tracks of NASCAR and take his seat behind the wheel for the race at Indianapolis, scheduled for August 13. The Indianapolis track, which happens to be a road course, is something that the three-time Supercar champion is already familiar with.

As the announcement was made public by the team, NASCAR enthusiasts and the driver were more than elated with the news. SVG revealed to the media, “I never dreamed this could have all rolled out this way. Just getting to race in NASCAR is an opportunity I never thought I would get, but then to win and get another chance this year is beyond anything I imagined.”

“I can’t thank [Trackhouse founder and owner] Justin Marks, everyone at Trackhouse Racing and NASCAR for this opportunity,” Shane Van Gisbergen concluded.

Moreover, it is not just Shane Van Gisbergen, the only non-American who will be saddling a stock car in Indianapolis. He will be joined by fellow Supercar driver Brodie Kostecki, Formula 1 champion Jenson Button, and Japanese Formula 1 driver Kamui Kobayashi.

With his newfound success in NASCAR, SVG has surely created his fan base and is a fan favorite to win the race, but it seems that Christopher Bell is optimistic about the Cup Series driver and drops advice for SVG.

The JGR driver expressed, “I would just say just the fact that we all have been there, we as in the Cup group there for a number of years now […] He’s [SVG] gonna have to play a catchup little bit on the track knowledge and I am sure he’s gonna have a bunch of simulator time that will prepare him for the visuals of it.

“But I would expect by the end of the weekend then or him to not really have a disadvantage[…]He’s gonna have to learn the track a little bit more than the regulars will.”

NASCAR enthusiasts surely await the arrival of August 13, as the race is set to be a spectacle for the eyes to witness and will be remembered for ages to come.
