Without a doubt, Ty Gibbs is a talented driver with a long career ahead of him. He showed flashes of brilliance last year with his Xfinity cameo appearances. However, his full-time debut was a bit shaky, with a few controversies. He managed to weather them until his big break came after Pocono. That was when Kurt Busch had his accident and sat out for the rest of the season, allowing Gibbs as a super substitute. Toyota Racing Development President, David Wilson, spoke about the youngster in light of his performances.
Toyota Racing Development President David Wilson says Ty Gibbs still has relatively few reps as a driver compared to his peers, and no one expected to him to progress as quickly as he has. So is he ready for Cup (assuming he’l be in the 18 next year)? Wilson’s response: pic.twitter.com/lLk3YHQGYr

He said, “What’s remarkable about Ty Gibbs is, you look at the number of reps he has. As a driver, relative to his peers, and it’s far fewer. On paper, I don’t think anyone expected him to progress as quickly as he has. What we have to remember is, particularly if you contemplate him continuing to drive at the Cup level. He’s still got a lot to learn and a driver as young as him. He just turned 20, he’s going to make mistakes.”

What else did he say about Ty Gibbs?
However, Wilson did admit that Gibbs has been susceptible to mistakes this year. One of his biggest mistakes was when he had a square-off against Sam Mayer and a physical altercation. Wilson touched on that incident and assured that Ty Gibbs has learned from his error since then.

He continued, “But most important, he has people around him that can keep coaching him up. I do like the way he has matured this year. You remember early in the season, he was getting into scraps and once he got out of the car, he was handling that aggressively. So he’s done a much better job handling the emotion once he gets out of the car. For a driver as young as he is to start handling those situations, is good but he’s still seeing things that are new to him and it’s going to be a dynamic time for him.”

One thing is for sure, Ty Gibbs will have to prove that he deserves a full-time Cup Series seat. The 23XI Racing team is a good place for him to gain that knowledge and experience. Additionally, he can try and measure himself against a driver of Bubba Wallace’s caliber.
