Sunday’s race at Bristol was a tough one for Joe Gibbs Racing’s (JGR) Kyle Busch. With the second engine failure in two weeks, Busch witnessed an unexpected end to his race. And this led to his disqualification from the series. However, NASCAR fans came up with their own new theories about the incident.
With Busch’s latest announcement about him joining Richard Childress Racing next year, fans believe that JGR handed an experimental car to the #18 Toyota Camry driver. Moreover, some fans also accused JGR and Toyota for deliberately handing over faulty cars so that they can get rid of Busch earlier.
But slamming all the theories, Toyota’s Racing Development President, David Wilson said that the engine failures are “the worst nightmare imaginable for me personally and for our team.” Addressing the fan theories, Wilson said; “I’ll say that it is offensive as a professional and somebody who takes their responsibility as greatly as I do.”
He further added, “And I’ll say for those fans who are actually ignorant enough to suggest that this is some sort of a mastermind conspiracy to rid ourselves of Kyle Busch early, I would simply say go back to trying to find the edge of the flat earth. It’s absurd.”
Wilson also mentioned that he has talked to Busch about his move to RCR. He shared that it has not been an issue with him or the team. He said; “We both underscored our intent to have a mic drop moment in Phoenix, in he’s going to win his third championship and he’s going to take that championship with him.”
Moreover, Wilson said that losing Busch is a massive setback for JGR. Calling it a ‘crushing blow’ to the team, he said that Busch is “money in the playoffs.” And hence losing him early on has no upside for the organisation.
What does David Wilson thinks happened with Kyle Busch at Bristol?
He further revealed that Toyota has identified the issues with the engines. And said that the changes would be implemented in the remaining races. Toyota drivers Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell would be racing in the Round of 12, starting next week.

Wilson added that even if Toyota wins the series with Hamlin or Bell, he would still be haunted by what happened with Busch. He said; “I’m still going to be haunted by what happened, not just in Bristol, but Darlington as well. Two engine failures across three weeks is unheard of. It’s unacceptable.”
Toyota cars had not reported any engine failures last year. However, with two engine issues within a short span of two weeks is a matter of grave concern. David Wilson revealed that Toyota identified an instability in the valve train that triggered due to NASCAR’s mandated rev limiter.

He further explained that Busch accidentally missed an up-shift while changing the fourth gear to fifth. And this buzzed the rev limiter hard. Admitting that the engine should have been more durable, Wilson feels that due to some misjudged gear ratios and the rev limiter issues, Busch’s engine gave up at Bristol.
