NASCAR is a sport where drivers have a prolonged career. Often, race car drivers dedicate their entire life to racing, starting at a very young age and driving up until their bodies don’t function normally. And Tony Stewart is no different. But there’s a reason for it.

A reason that is rather dumb, actually.

Funny enough, Stewart blatantly revealed that drivers are, “Too dumb to sit there and retire”. He talked about how drivers like to spend the money they made on racing even more.

He explained, “We are too dumb to sit there and retire and take all the money that we tried to save all of our life so we wouldn’t have to work the rest of our lives. We just take it and spend it, and race cars and going out and racing each night. But we do it because we love it.”

The three-time Cup Series Champion explained the story of a driver he knows as an example. He expressed, I saw Kenny Schrader at Knoxville last week for a night. He was running his modified the next night somewhere else. So he came A night early and hung out with us and watched the races.”

Despite retiring a few years ago, Tony regularly participates and has a team in the NHRA, competes in other series, and even runs his Cup Series team with Gene Haas. But he’s not alone.

Of course, Stewart isn’t the only one too dumb to retire of course, in fact, there’s a whole group of drivers who continue to race. Bill Elliott still races and recently competed with his son. But the three-time champ took special mention of some drivers who consistently compete.

He said, “There’s just something about guys like Kenny Wallace, Kenny Straighter, myself. You know, guys like Kyle Larson and Christopher Bell that sit there and don’t have to go do this stuff. But that’s what they love to do. And we love doesn’t matter whether there’s 50 people in the stands or 50 people in the stands. We love race, and we love. Driving dirt cars. And. We’ll go drive halfway through the night to get to the next place.”

So clearly, it’s their lifestyle at this point that they don’t want to run away from. It makes sense why retired drivers find it so hard to escape from the racing world. On top of that, former drivers also bring the necessary experience in racing and driving cars which makes them important additions to racing teams even in non-racing roles.
