As Tony Stewart and Leah Pruett navigate the demands of parenthood, both parents are finding ways to balance their busy careers with family life. Leah, a formidable force in the world of drag racing, did not just compete at the highest levels but also adapted her training and lifestyle to ensure peak performance on and off the track. But looks like it’s back to square one, after the couple welcoming their baby boy, Dominic Stewart.
While Tony will surely tell you some vivid details of sleepless nights, and diaper-changing duties, it’s Leah who’s had to experience the most changes. And, understandably so. But don’t worry as the semi-retired drag racing is back to track to achieve what she envisions as peak health…
On January 7, exactly 51 days after she gave birth, Pruett was seen back in the gym posting a selfie on her Instagram story, along with a message that perfectly encapsulated what it’s like being a new mother: “Positive: My knees feel so much better after dropping 35 lbs. Negative: None. My body did an amazing thing: growing Dom and giving birth. I lost my good b–ty, though, and my abs are weak, but I’m working on that.”

As a notable figure in the Top Fuel class, fitness is closely tied to her performance, both on and off the track. Race weekends can involve grueling sixteen-hour days filled with a flurry of activities, from managing sponsor meetings to packing parachutes and conducting media engagements. To handle this high-paced environment, she prioritizes conditioning and fitness. Her diet also plays a critical role in her performance. Since both the car and the driver must be a minimum weight, losing weight as a driver allows more weight to be shifted to the rear of the car, enhancing traction.
So, whenever you met Leah for lunch before she embarked on her motherhood journey, it was a given that she’d be happily munching on a plate of “grilled chicken with as much hot sauce as I can to put some flavor in, and broccoli”. Things have changed now. But, as little Dom keeps growing—complete with his, father’s race-car like sounding beat-boxing lullabies—Leah is slowly finding her rhythm one day at her time. But it must not be that easy, keep in mind. Especially since the 36-year-old was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (a disease where the body’s immune system attacks the thyroid gland)…
Around 2020 or 2021, the racer started noticing some weird changes in her body. “I was losing a lot of hair. I was constantly cold. I was having a very hard time compartmentalizing and controlling my emotions, which is not something I’ve ever had an issue with,” she had said last year. Notably, the disease, if left untreated, can affect pregnancy, result in miscarriages and birth defects.
Having said that, transitioning from driving a dragster to a full-time racing career has been quite challenging for Pruett. She has always prioritized keeping her fans in the loop about her personal and professional life through regular social media updates. However, since the arrival of Dominic, her priorities have shifted, and most of her time and energy are now devoted to him. As a result, her social media activity has decreased, with only a few updates shared leading up to the holiday season.
Here’s a look into how her day unfolds: “Life lately. Even though I haven’t posted much, Dom has for sure taken over my sleep schedule and camera roll. He’s now over a month old and has got all of his responsibilities down. Eat, sleep, toot, and look cute ☺️.” She wrote this with photos of Dominic and the entire family.”
At the same time, Pruett has also dealt with the struggles of postpartum.

Leah Pruett shares details of a night away from baby Dom
Just a few weeks ago, Leah Pruett and Tony Stewart shared glimpses into Dom’s first Christmas. Carrying on his father’s legacy, Dom received a red vehicle, one he looked incredibly happy to be in. It was a joyful parenthood moment. However, a while later, Pruett shared a different struggle she faced as a mom.
Baby Dom came at a time when his father was away at a Top Fuel Race. While Smoke came to see his son and had to leave immediately, it was a family that was formed. At the same time, Stewart and Pruett wanted some time for themselves, taking a night away from baby Dom recently.
Posting a story about a meme on Instagram, Leah Pruett expressed, “The first time going on a date with your husband after emerging from the postpartum daze.” Taking a night away from her baby, even for a night, must have been a difficult experience for a new mother. Pruett’s story and continual updates on social media serve as a reminder for fans about the reality of parenthood. While fans shower their love on pictures of the family, Pruett’s willingness to speak up about the struggles she faces is an important aspect of the power she holds as a popular figure in racing.
