Ahead of this pivotal race, Rodney Childers, the crew chief of Kevin Harvick, shares his perspective on Bristol. Childers emphasizes that success at this short track hinges on how fast their car is. He acknowledges the significance of Bristol in their racing journey, expressing the team’s excitement every year when they head to this iconic venue.

Childers unravels the winning strategy, highlighting the importance of tire management. At Bristol, where laps are swift and unforgiving, preserving tire quality is paramount. Pit stops under green conditions can cost valuable laps. Making tire conservation and smart fuel management key components of their strategy. The crew chief underscores the need to maintain a well-balanced car that navigates the corners efficiently and delivers strong acceleration out of them.

“Forging ahead at Bristol is just about being fast. You know, it’s a great racetrack for us. Going up there is always a lot of fun,” Childers said. “The biggest thing at Bristol is just keeping good tires on it [the car]. Not putting yourself in a position where you have to pit under green. If you pit under green, you’re going to lose 2 laps and be out of it. So, just keeping enough fuel in it, keeping good tires on it, keeping the car where it turns really well in the center of the corner and has good drive-off is going to be key.”

Harvick’s playoff fate hangs in the balance, with a 7-point margin separating him from the cutline. However, Harvick remains undaunted. He recognizes that in the world of NASCAR, racing as hard as possible and accepting the outcome is the only way forward.

He understands that strategy can vary based on a team’s position in the race. For those in the middle of the points standings, survival is the primary goal. However, for those at the bottom, like Harvick, aggressive strategies become a necessity. Harvick’s extensive experience on Bristol’s concrete oval instills a sense of confidence.

He explained, “You go race as hard as you can and where it falls, it falls. It’s like Martin’s situation last year. There’s nothing you can do about some things, and I don’t worry about those things anymore.

Drawing on his past experiences, he recognizes the need to seize opportunities and collect points. “The ‘just survive’ strategy at Bristol is great as long as you’re up in the points or in the middle of the pack in the points. But if you’re in the bottom third of those points, you’ve got to make some stuff happen and try to get points in the stages and try to win the race.”
