The competition is pretty intense in NASCAR. With such a rigorous effort on the tracks every week, sometimes the drivers might opt for an easier way out. The easier way, however, might as well involve going against the spirit of the sport. Cheating is one of the aspects NASCAR has kept close tabs on and we have the perfect people describing it for us.

Recently, we had none other than Kenny Wallace and Tony Stewart owned Eldora Million Winner talk about the pressing issue.

In case you are unaware, we are talking about the 3-time Late-Model Dirt car champion, Jonathan Davenport, who appeared as a guest on The Kenny Conversation. Together, the duo discussed the hot topic of cheating allegations in dirt racing and possible ways to do it, including the Apple Watch.

Kenny Wallace Speaks on the Use of Signal Sticks to Communicate With Drivers

Two weeks back, the authorities of Eldora Speedway banned using signal sticks. Citing the reason as crew members manipulating the gestures to convey important information to the driver. The announcement, although expected, must be a caution as rumors of teams using signal stick illegitimately float. Signal sticks have been in the business for some time now and are being unfairly used for advantages. As Kenny prepares his question, Davenport explains how signal sticks are a double-edged sword. Implying that he has been on the good side of outcomes many times, he also emphasizes the need for better vigilance in NASCAR.

“We got to find a way to police everything,” said Davenport. “As far as Apple watches or lights in a car, there’s a lot of stuff that can on that. You know, drivers can get signals. Two-way radios. They’re not two-way radios, two single-way radios where you can know you got a receiver in one ear and somebody talking to you in the other ear in the stands.”

The 5-time World 100 winner understands the decision by the authorities. As the video goes on, he applauds the decision, saying, “So there’s always some things going on, but if we can find a way to police all that, make it a level playing field that’s great. I mean, I always thought it looked dumb on our sport. Everybody around the track is trying to land airplanes anyway.”

Kenny bursts into laughter as he says, ” I never thought about it that way. Come on. Bring it, bring it! So, by them getting rid of sticks, the Apple watches, the things like that, now we listen you and I are not idiots. I build you know my own race cars and you too, so nobody gonna tell us anything.”

The two discuss more on the specifications of the violation as well ahead in the video.

Ahead in the video, Kenny further adds, “So the Apple watches, it wasn’t much about traction control which they checked the cars, they’re talking to the drivers, telling them when to change lanes.” Information like this could be very helpful input to the driver and could potentially win him a race.

Davenport had a precise reply to this as he revealed the methodical approach to cheating. He also discloses how he used to have a phone beside him in the car as well.

Yeah, I mean you can get a test message on your watch and look at it. If it vibrates or something, you know you need to change, there’s all kind of different things. Back in 2012, I used to have my phone in the car with me and I could text under caution. That’s back before anybody so I mean we’ve all done it.”

“But there’s got to be a way to take it all. It’ll definitely make some finishes better than what they have been.”

Davenport is one of the advocates of banning the signal sticks use and strict policing in NASCAR. Not just in the dirt but in other divisions of NASCAR as well. While cheating remains a rampant issue in every sport, the scope of being able to conceal it must be removed from its root.
